The Senior Process Engineer leads process engineering efforts in order for Operations management to establish a proactive process management approach which meets all contract limits and regulatory requirements while controlling operating costs. Focus is on wastewater operations and biosolids processing at Jones Island and South Shore treatment plants, air pollution control, and storm water management. Conducts applied studies and research, supports equipment and process troubleshooting and optimization, and carries out technical review and planning for capital projects and Veolia projects.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / JOB DUTIES
Reviews and evaluates process performance for wastewater treatment, air pollution control, biosolids processing and storm water management systems for regulatory compliance, optimization and improvements.
Establishes and reports metrics which demonstrate permit and contract compliance as well as consumption of energy and consumables.
Performs process modeling, trends process performance, uses process management systems to establish a proactive process management approach. Tracks operating costs and recommends improvements to reduce Cost of Goods Sold (COGS).
Performs and/or directs process optimization projects at various levels including bench and full-scale pilots. Prepares or directs preparation and modification of reports, design specifications, plans and schedules for projects.
Calculates cost and determines feasibility of projects based on analysis of collected data.
Designs systems which include instruments, controls, piping, valves, machines, and mechanical or electrical systems.
Collaborates with Operations and Asset Management to obtain optimum utilization of systems and processes.
Provides field evaluations and recommends operation or maintenance modifications.
Reviews and critiques capital project planning and design efforts and documents.
Promotes safety practices and procedures by training employees, reporting on unsafe conditions and by filing reports on injuries.
Assists in the development of training materials and providing training for Operations staff.
Ensures that all Regulatory reports are prepared and submitted accurately and on time. .
Reports actual cost of goods sold and projects the annual cost. Provides assistance with budgeting and forecasting.
Completes miscellaneous duties as assigned. Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required in Civil or Chemical Engineering or related field from accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred.
A Wisconsin Professional Engineers (PE) license is required.
Advanced Wisconsin Wastewater Operator Certification required; including the following subclasses:
(a) Biological Solids/Sludge Handling, Processing & Reuse (Advanced)
(b) Biological Treatment: Suspended Growth Processes (Advanced)
(c) Disinfection (Advanced)
(d) Nutrient Removal: Total Phosphorous (Advanced)
(e) Solids Separation (Advanced)

Strong basic mathematics and computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and process control software.
Minimum 10 to 15 years of practical experience in engineering or related field.
Minimum of five years municipal wastewater treatment related experience required
Experience in process control optimization and system design preferred.
