Southwest Research Institute San Antonio, TX (On Site) Full-Time


Who We Are:

As the Commercial Vehicle R&D team, we provide design, development, and analysis on components, engines, powertrains, and vehicles. We support research, modeling and demonstrations for combustion, emissions, and powertrain energy management for vehicles and off-road machines.



Objectives of this Role:

  • This position will help develop commercial vehicle transportation solutions that reduce carbon and harmful pollutant emissions.
  • Be a part of the team that pushes the boundaries of conventional, electrified and alternative fuel powertrains.
  • Operate test cell /stands including data acquisition and control system, test article operation, and data analysis.
  • Software development, CAN and vehicle controller development and debugging.
  • Support the Commercial Vehicle R&D section by preparing proposals, managing project efforts, writing reports and publishing peer-reviewed papers.
  • Feed your passion for bringing ideas to life while working amongst dozens of world class test cells to research and develop solutions to industry challenges.
  • Interface directly with the worlds leading transportation companies including vehicle OEM's and major component supplier.


Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Work daily with a team of experienced research engineers and project managers to assist in engine, electric component and emissions experiments, data acquisition, and analysis of results.
  • Create reports (both Powerpoint and Word) summarizing assigned tasks and data collected.
  • Operate engine and powertrain test cells with multiple data acquisition systems.
  • Develop deep understanding of proper measurement equipment selection, instrumentation of engines, electric components and aftertreatment, and calibration of transducers and support systems.
  • Work daily with the laboratory technical staff for support of test stands. Be the interface to relay senior engineer requirements to the proper support staff. This can include general mechanical work, electronic support, and machining assistance.
  • Solve complex physics and thermodynamics problems by developing software solutions for data management and interpretation of test results.
  • Use Python, Matlab, Simulink and 1D and 3D simulation tools to augment research and efficiently develop powertrain solutions.
  • Use hands-on experience to troubleshoot engine, powertrain and test cell controls and mechanical malfunctions.
  • Support fully automated powertrain test cells and utilize continuous improvement techniques to reduce downtime and increase test result fidelity.


Requirements:

  • Requires a Masters with a 3.00 GPA in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Automotive, or related engineering degree
  • 0-5 years: Must have skills in some type of engineering software such as Labview, Matlab, Simulink, Python, or others
  • 0-5 years: Must have skills in the full suite of Microsoft products including Excel, Word and Powerpoint
  • 0-5 years: Controls development for commercial vehicle powertrains, aftertreatment systems, or electrified powertrains
  • Have strong interest in areas such as transportation, future automotive technology, or greenhouse gas reduction as demonstrated through course selection, or activities outside of school that required technical study and applications within the automotive field
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required
