Ultrasound Technologist Research PD

Brown University Health Providence, RI (Onsite) Full-Time

We are looking for a per diem ultrasonographer with ARDMS certification to join our 3D Ultrasound Study. This study examines how behaviors and feelings during pregnancy including the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs/vapes/JUULS) impact babies' behaviors and brain development. Participants take part in interviews complete questionnaires and undergo up to three ultrasound sessions throughout their pregnancy. These sessions include non-diagnostic transabdominal ultrasounds with 2D biometric measurements (e.g. head circumference biparietal diameter) and 3D volumes of brain structures (e.g. cerebellar width/volume corpus callosum). We also record fetal behavior during these ultrasounds.

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator and following established research study procedures performs non-diagnostic procedures by using ultrasound equipment which uses the principles of sonography to produce images giving size and depth of the tissue being studied.

Responsibilities:

Complies with hospital and department policies and procedures including protecting the confidentiality of research study participant information.

Operates ultrasound equipment efficiently.

Observes and reassures research study participants prior to and during all procedures.

Performs fetal ultrasound sessions for the research studies with pregnant participants and offline biometry.

Performs neonatal cranial ultrasound using a curved array transducer for 3D volumes.

Reviews and/or records pertinent research study participant medical history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum data results.

Positions and instructs participant regarding the procedure in order to obtain the desired results specified by the research studys protocols.

Conducts scanning procedure using ultrasound equipment and video-records data.

Assembles all necessary information and imaging including own impressions and present them to the Principal Investigator.

Orders and stores supplies required for ultrasound procedures.

Checks expiration dates for all ultrasound materials and supplies. Disposes of expired materials and supplies using appropriate procedure.

Provides for the clinical experience of ultrasound students instructing and guiding students through ultrasound procedures and exams.

Ensures that ultrasound and other applicable study equipment functions properly to maintain accuracy of the procedures. Notifies study clinical research manager when service is needed.

Maintains and enhances own professional expertise through participation in in-service education professional seminars and meetings.

Performs all duties in consideration of optimum study efficiency.

All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age-specific needs of research participants.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:


ARDMS certification required.
ARDMS registration required for new graduates within 6 months of graduation from approved school.


Analytical skills to determine best method of obtaining the desired results. Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with research study participants who may be under physical and/or emotional stress as well as with staff members and investigators.


EXPERIENCE:


One year of progressive fetal and neonatal cranial ultrasounds 3D volumes experience preferred.


INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Incumbent functions independently within a broad scope of department policies and practices; generally refers specific problems to supervisor only where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
