Job Description

The Army Reserve is designed for people who want to serve their country while pursuing their civilian careers and goals. Many professionals as well as college students are Soldiers in the Army Reserve. As a Reserve Soldier you can take advantage of more than 120 different careers you can train for that give you the skills and strength to succeed in the Army and in your civilian life.




Civil Affairs Specialists operate in teams in support of both conventional and special operations forces. Civil Affairs Soldiers identify critical requirements needed by local citizens in peacetime or crisis situations. They also locate civil resources to support military operations, to prevent non-combatant injury or incident, to minimize civilian interference with military operations, to facilitate humanitarian assistance activities, and to establish and maintain communication with civilian aid agencies and organizations.  This position is comparable to a civilian social worker, international aid worker or government agency worker.


Your duties as a Civil Affairs Specialist may include:


  • Helping plan U.S. government interagency procedures for national or regional emergencies
  • Assisting with civil-military planning and support
  • Coordinating military resources to support reconstitution or reconstruction activities
  • Supporting national disaster, defense or emergency assistance and response activities
  • Fostering and maintain dialogue with civilian aid agencies and civilian relief and assistance organizations
  • Providing emergency coordination and administration where political-economic structures have been incapacitated


For initial entry Soldiers, job training begins with 9 weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills.  This initial training will be followed by 13 weeks of Advanced Individual Training, where you'll learn the skills of a Civil Affairs specialist and be assigned to an Army Reserve Civil Affairs unit. Airborne qualified active duty Noncommissioned Officers can reclassify as Civil Affairs sergeants after successful completion of an intensive 20-week training program that includes language, negotiations and regional training.  For prior service Soldiers, use your experience in a new capacity while continuing to pursue your civilian career.

The skills you learn as a Civil Affairs Specialist will help prepare you for a civilian future with educational institutions, government offices, social services and commercial businesses. You'll also be qualified to pursue a career as a historian, case worker, educational specialist, office manager, field representative or intelligence research specialist.


In the Army Reserve, you could be eligible for:

  • Enlistment bonuses totaling up to $20,000
  • Up to $24,012 for college
  • Up to $20,000 to repay qualifying student loans
  • Up to $4,500 a year tuition assistance while serving

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien
  • 17–35 years old
  • Healthy and in good physical condition
  • In good moral standing
  • High School or equivalent education
  • Enlistment in the Army Reserve
