Job Description

The Medical Assistant (MA) for the PACE Clinic works under the general supervision of the Clinic Nurse, and within regulatory practice. The MA assists in the provision of direct patient care by performing routine procedures, technical and clerical supportive services in the clinic setting. The MA may administer intramuscular, subcutaneous or intra-dermal injection and may perform skin tests, administer oral medications, venipunctures and skin punctures for blood specimens.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs and documents accurate preliminary data collection: Collects data on each participant to be seen in the clinic, including, but not limited to vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, weight, height, respirations), allergies, medications, pain scale, patient’s complaints/symptoms and immunologic status.
  • Assists medical provider (PCP): Carries out medical provider’s orders by performing requested tests such as, but not limited to: glucometer test, urine dip test, administers PPDs, TB test, audio testing, setup and assist with minor procedures, pelvic exam setup and assistance, phlebotomy draw, EKGs, ear lavage, injections.
  • Responsible for scheduling routine/follow-up appointments, follows-up on missed appointments, and makes phone calls as directed.
  • Maintains charting/records: Documents pertinent patient information, procedures, medications and injections administered, as well as patient responses, and report findings to the medical provider.
  • Records and signs symptoms, reaction and progress of patient, and reports findings to the medical provider. Assists with maintaining logs for the clinic.
  • Assists with care and handling of supplies, equipment and instruments.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Work in a team environment.
  • Communicate participants’ status and needs.
  • Act within the scope of authority to practice.
  • Meet a standardized set of competencies for the specific position description established by CalOptima PACE and approved by regulatory agencies before working independently.
  • Be medically cleared for communicable diseases and have all immunizations up-to-date.
  • Handle participant health information following PHI and HIPPA regulations and guidelines.
  • Care for geriatric participants.
  • Function as a participant advocate ensuring participant concerns are resolved or addressed expeditiously.

Experience & Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medical Assistant certification from an accredited school required.
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience required, with at least 1 year working with the frail or elderly population. Relevant experience within the last 3 years strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and in one of CalOptima's defined threshold language is preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • Clinical treatment of geriatric patients and their acute and chronic conditions.
  • Basic computer skills and the use of e-mail.
