VOA-GNY’s life-changing, often life-saving work impacts the lives of individuals and families who are homeless and those at risk of homelessness, families recovering from domestic violence, children with developmental delays, individuals living with HIV/AIDS or behavioral health issues, older adults and veterans struggling to reintegrate. VOA, Inc. is one of the largest providers of permanent, supportive housing in the United States. VOA-GNY is the largest provider of supportive housing for veterans in New York, and is committed to addressing the needs of the community with compassion, creativity, respect, and therapeutic models that inform our work.


The housing specialist assures housing readiness of clients by implementing appropriate trainings and developing permanent housing options in both public and private sectors.


The position requires an associate’s degree with two years of related experience in housing placement services for low-income and/or homeless population.  Knowledge of federal guidelines for public and private low-income housing required.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Clean and valid driver’s license.  Must maintain agency authorized driver’s status.


  1. Conduct housing eligibility assessments of all applicable clients.

  2. Develop linkages with real estate companies and office of public housing.

  3. Maintain and update listings of permanent affordable housing.

  4. Develop and facilitate client workshops and individual sessions on skills and information necessary to acquire and maintain independent permanent housing.

  5. Track placements and conduct follow up of clients placed into permanent housing.

  6. Train and supervise housing staff.

  7. Perform other related duties as required.


  1. Clients are properly assessed for appropriate housing options.

  2. New housing options are pursued and obtained.

  3. Lists of affordable housing are always available for eligible clients.

  4. Clients are well trained and receive the skills they need to qualify for permanent housing.

  5. Clients’ progress is tracked and appropriate follow up is maintained.

  6. Housing staff receive information they need to properly service their clients.
