Job Summary: Under the direction of the Senior Manager, the Laboratory Technician will perform day-to-day preparation and processing of human tissues for downstream applications. The Laboratory Technician will perform aspects of histology procedures that include, but are not limited to microtomy, frozen sectioning using a cryostat, embedding, coverslipping, and H&E staining. In addition to the routine histology procedures, the Laboratory Technician will also perform molecular biology techniques involving DNA and RNA isolation and protein lysate preparation. Other duties include but are not limited to instrument maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
Prepares sections of human tissue for microscopic examination, using principles and knowledge of histology techniques.
Performs frozen sections for human tissue using cryostats.
Prepares solution, stains, and reagent in accordance with Standard Operatin Procedures.
Ensures that all equipment, instruments, and accessories are in proper state of readiness and cleanliness for daily operational use.
Retrieve frozen samples for sectioning in accordance to Standard Operating Procedures,and instructions set forth by the manager.
Performs required quality control procedures for compliance with all local, state, andfederal laws.
Performs data entry and data generation for QC reports of tissues quality.
Performs DNA and RNA isolation and protein lysate generation using established protocols.
Maintains proper documentation of required maintenance on laboratory equipment, instruments, and accessories.
Stores samples at appropriate temperature in accordance with company Standard Operating Procedures.
Follows all safety precautions when using chemicals and reagents demonstrating knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices, OSHA standards all in accordance with BSL2 laboratory safety standards.
Properly disposing of contaminated biohazardous waste using universal precautions, CLIA, and OSHA, BSL2 regulations.
Maintains good housekeeping of laboratory area.
Maintains inventory and stock of laboratory reagents and supplies.
Maintains patient confidentiality according to HIPAA rules and regulations.
Responsible for all proper documentation according to standards and SOPs.
Reports any deviations in work process/operations and protocols to manager.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience with quality control/quality assurance procedures, compliance with regulatory requirements
Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook; experience with database software and tracking systems
Ability to work independently.
Excellent attention to detail, documentation skills, and work well in a group environment.
Flexible, agile and able to successfully change activities and directions quickly when responding to workflow needs.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Bachelor of Science degree in laboratory science, medical laboratory technology, or a related discipline.
Additional related experience can substitute for education.
The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Will be exposed to a cold freezer environment. Freezer temperatures range between -20°C -196°C.
Must be able to process and handle materials frozen and on dry ice (-78°C) for up to 6 hours per day
