Position Summary Information
The Course Design Assistant will assist Instructional Designers and faculty in creating and maintaining online course materials. Troubleshoot and resolve faculty, staff, and student problems with online course materials and Blackboard course management system functionality. Develop training materials and job-aids for faculty. Complete assessments and report on quality assurance activities. Participate in special projects as assigned to support the overall strategic mission of the College’s online program.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Instructional Design and Development, Instructional Designers, and/or faculty, create instructional materials using appropriate technology and instructional content provided by faculty to support online course development and redesign projects. Develop job-aids and training materials for faculty to distribute online or deliver in in-person workshops and at conferences. Participate in planning and execution of faculty professional development events and workshops (including giving presentations and assisting with one-on-one guidance during sessions). Monitor ELI ID Help Desk and assist with troubleshooting and resolving issues/concerns related to online course materials and Blackboard course management system functionality. Perform broad quality checks on online courses to ensure that courses are set up correctly and available at session start dates. Participate in ELI staff meetings and ID team meetings. Contribute to special projects as assigned to support the overall strategic mission of ELI.
Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Previous experience in education or IT.
Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a related field. Experience working in a higher education environment. Knowledge of and experience with the nationally recognized Quality Matters standards/program. Webmaster and/or web content management experience. Experience teaching online.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and user-support skills. Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment. Ability to work independently and with a team. Knowledge and skill in a variety of technology tools to create multimedia content (e.g., Adobe Acrobat, Articulate, Camtasia, Captivate, SoftChalk, podcasting tools, Google Apps). Experience using Blackboard or other learning management systems to create, organize, and deploy instructional materials. Skilled in creating content for clients, preferably in the higher education environment. Ability to maintain/update web-based materials using a course management system. Skills providing user training and support for technology tools. Understanding of distance learning and of community college faculty, staff, and students. Knowledge of and ability to train others in distance education tools, and the ability to work with staff, faculty, and students in an educational environment.
