Position Summary 
Contributes strategic vision and serves as the top-level technical contributor in the planning, design, development and implementation of integrated technology solutions that support and enhance storage management hardware and software for the client. Responsible for the overall design and architecture of the storage management environment.  Leads in the engineering, build, installation / configuration, operation, and maintenance / support of centralized storage hardware (SAN, NAS, etc.) and software, which includes enterprise backup & recovery hardware and software, to ensure stability, reliability, recoverability and acceptable performance. Optimizes storage infrastructure via monitoring, tuning, capacity planning and by performing necessary hardware and software upgrades in accordance with ITIL best practices.  Plans and develops the detailed engineering, design and implementation of the Medical Center's storage infrastructure. Consults on major initiatives, including multiple departments, service lines, platforms, and various administrative interfaces regarding the integration of storage management technology with overall business/healthcare solutions. Responsible for storage management projects involving high business risk, scope and impact to the organization; leads and facilitates strategic projects involved in evaluating and researching new and existing products, procedures and/or workflows needs associated with storage management hardware ans software for the Medical Center. Acts as a subject matter expert on storage management strategies, procedures, policies, and methodologies. Provides direction and insight to leaders, peers and team members regarding the identification and alignment of strategic storage management requirements with evolving information technology/business opportunities. Recognized across the organization for storage management expertise and sought as a source for resolution of unique or the most complex systems problems.

Duties and Responsibilities 
The duties of this position are performed under general review and supervision.  Some assignments will be completed independently, subject to periodic review and approval.             
 
Engineering (40%)
- Serves as the top level technical expert responsible for the engineering, design and architecture of the storage management environment.
- Develops strategy of storage management systems and the design infrastructure necessary to support that strategy.
- Translates business/information technology needs into long-term architecture solutions.
- Defines, designs, and constructs storage management architecture and infrastructure for the Medical Center; responsible for developing storage management blueprints, evaluating hardware and software platforms, and integrating systems.
- Responsible for the development of policies, standards and guidelines that direct the selection, development, implementation and use of information technology within the storage management environment.
- Conceptualizes and configures hardware, software and design requirements for storage management networks.
- Plans and evaluates the most complex existing storage management hardware and software and makes recommendations for resources required to maintain and/or expand service levels.
- Researches and recommends the appropriate storage management software and hardware to meet organizational standards and objectives for system performance.
- Plans, engineers and coordinates the detailed design, implementation and documentation of storage management software and hardware.
- Installs and implements storage management software (e.g. AppSync, Spectrum Protect, PowerPath, etc.) and other tools to ensure stability, reliability and acceptable performance.  Plans and performs upgrades of storage software; coordinates necessary integration into the new environment.
- Evaluates, develops and implements new and evolving storage technologies and capabilities that will improve the reliability, scalability, sustainability, and availability of the systems that utilize the OSUWMC IT storage infrastructure.
- Consults and coordinates with customer departments to determine the business functions and activities of the department; may determine storage requirements and develop technical specifications based on these requirements.
- Prepares detailed specifications for storage hardware and software upgrades, monitoring tools, operations automation and enhancement packages, etc.
- Provides technical guidance pertaining to the capabilities, limitations and operational requirements of OSUWMC IT's storage infrastructure to department and site management.
- Reviews and evaluates technology alternatives, and offers purchase recommendations based on findings.
- Influences the strategic future direction of the client as it relates to the alignment of creative storage systems solutions and business opportunities; contributes to the overall strategic vision of the organization and integrates a broad range of ideas regarding storage technology plans and strategies to improve the existing systems and operations of the client.
 
Projects (30%)
- Consults on major initiatives, including multiple departments, service lines, platforms, and various administrative interfaces regarding the integration of storage management technology with overall business/healthcare solutions.
- Responsible for storage management projects involving high business risk, scope and impact to the organization; leads and facilitates strategic projects involved in evaluating and researching new and existing products, procedures and/or workflows needs associated with storage management hardware and software for the client
- Evaluates integrated technology strategies and plans for large-scale storage management initiatives and/or projects that cross disciplines and business units and which are the most complex in nature and based on technical and business specifications in accordance with company as well as healthcare industry standards.
- Develops, implements, and recommends storage management policies, standards and procedures.
- Provides subject matter mentoring on all storage management activities. Acts as a resource for direction, training and guidance for less experienced staff.  Acts as a subject matter expert on storage management strategies, procedures, policies, and methodologies.
 
Support and Maintenance (20%)
MAINTENANCE
- Provides ongoing storage administration through such tasks as provisioning storage, developing and maintaining enterprise backup & recovery plans, applying software patches and other operational duties associated with storage management.
- Performs storage-centric monitoring and tuning activities to ensure adherence to established standards, stability, reliability and optimal performance.
- Utilizes data collected from these activities to forecast storage growth and provide capacity planning recommendations.
- Researches potential issues that may be encountered as a result of storage infrastructure upgrades and shares that information with the affected groups.
- Leads the development, planning, preparation and ongoing enterprise disaster recovery readiness as it pertains to the enterprise storage environment.
- Adheres to departmental processes, including (but not limited to) change management, configuration management, incident management, problem management and disaster recovery planning as it pertains to supporting storage infrastructure.
- Creates, documents, maintains and follows standard operating procedures.
- Leads the installation and implementation of storage management software (e.g. AppSync, Spectrum Protect, PowerPath, etc.) and other tools to ensure stability, reliability and acceptable performance.  Plans and performs upgrades of storage software; coordinates necessary integration into the new environment.
- Evaluates, develops and implements new and evolving storage technologies and capabilities that will improve the reliability, scalability, sustainability, and availability of the systems that utilize the client storage infrastructure.
- Consults and coordinates with customer departments to determine the business functions and activities of the department; may determine storage requirements and develop technical specifications based on these requirements.
- Prepares detailed specifications for storage hardware and software upgrades, monitoring tools, operations automation and enhancement packages, etc.
- Provides technical guidance pertaining to the capabilities, limitations and operational requirements of IT's storage infrastructure to department and Medical Center management.
- Reviews and evaluates technology alternatives, and may offer purchase recommendations based on findings.
- Leads the creation and upkeep of a technology roadmap specific to storage technologies.
- Coordinates appropriate management and staff of departments to assess needs and requirements, develop specifications, etc.
SUPPORT
- Determines, diagnoses, isolates and resolves storage resource and utilization problems to maximize scheduled uptime and minimize unplanned outages. 
- Facilitates necessary storage troubleshooting incidents with hardware and software vendors as required.
 
Other (10%)
- Reads and responds to (as appropriate) work-related e-mail
- Attends and participates in team meetings and other scheduled group discussions not associated with a project or other specific initiative
- Performs timekeeping on a weekly basis
- Travels between physical sites (as needed)
- Engages in professional growth & development activities
- May participate on departmental committees
- Performs on-call duties as required
- Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
For Hire:  College degree in Computer Science or related field desired, 10 years of experience in storage administration required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills. Experience with storage hardware and management software, specifically Dell / EMC, Brocade and Client, is required.
 
Ongoing: Cultivate knowledge of industry developments in the areas of storage management standards, interfaces, communications protocols, operating systems and virtualization technologies.  Obtain and maintain industry-recognized certification(s) as deemed appropriate for this role and as a condition of employment.
