Job Description

This position may be filled at the Financial Analyst level or the Senior Financial Analyst level depending on the candidate’s qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ depending on the position. Please see the Requirements Section below for the qualifications listed for each position.

The Financial Analyst on the Office of Research Administration Team is responsible for the execution of timely and accurate submissions of invoices and financial reports to external agencies for all sponsored projects university-wide. This position reviews sponsored project awards for required reports, agency- or program-specific guidelines or allowable/allocable expenditures, and reporting timelines; and maintains, monitors and updates reporting schedules to ensure timely submissions. Analyzes grant expenditures for allow-ability, allocability and reasonableness when submitting financial reports and invoices to agencies.

Coordinates with faculty members, departments and other Office of Research Administration (ORA) staff in order to ensure agency and university guidelines are followed and expenditures are appropriate for the associated account(s). Participates in policy development related to grants administration, allowable expenditures, and financial reporting; and has signature authority for all financial related reports (e.g. expenditure reports, invention statements, MBE/WBE reports, invoices and equipment reports).

The Senior Financial Analyst on the Office of Research Administration Team serves as a team lead within the Reporting Division. Responsibilities include participation on hiring committees, coordination of training for new hires, oversight of team member workload, report timeliness, coordination of access and training in federal and non-federal portal reporting systems. Assist Financial Analysts on reporting issues, including escalating issues to team Manager as deemed necessary; has authority to resolve situations more difficult in nature. Must show technical expertise and the ability to work independently.

Monitor and triage team workload when there are vacancies/leave of absences. Monitor agency sites, serve as an expert on policy and regulation for the team, sharing guideline updates that impact business processes. Coordinate regular meetings with team, resolve day to day issues and actively participate in meetings with Reporting Manager, GFO Director and ORA Director.

The position advises faculty, researchers, departments and other ORA staff to ensure compliance with agency and University policies, guidelines and procedures, and to ensure that expenditures are appropriate for the associated account(s). The position maintains, monitors, and updates reporting requirements and schedules to ensure financial reports are submitted in a timely manner as required by the agency and to ensure accuracy of institutional data and records. The position has signature authority for all financial reports (e.g., expense reports, invention statements, MBE/WBE reports, invoices, and equipment reports).

The position participates and advises in policy development related to grants administration, expense allowability and financial compliance. This position represents the University during internal and external audits with authority to resolve issues of non-compliance.


Job Requirements

Financial Analyst Requirements:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in finance or related field and three years of accounting or financial related experience with emphasis on analytical responsibilities.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Senior Financial Analyst Requirements:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in finance or related field and four years of accounting or financial related experience with emphasis on analytical responsibilities. Possess a proven track-record of problem solving experience in successfully leading projects through to completion.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Familiarity with computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. General knowledge of Federal research regulations. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide variety of individuals. Strong organizational skills including ability to work well under pressure and constant deadlines and deal with difficult individuals; and exceptional analytical skills.


Preferred Qualifications 

Senior Financial Analyst: Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification.


Working Conditions / Physical Demands
