NURSE PRACTITIONER

::The Nurse Practitioner will be required to exercise sound professional judgment while providing psychiatric health care to ambulatory patients in the inpatient setting.  Patient assessment, diagnosis and therapeutic interventions will be carried out in close association and collaboration with the unit physicians and other members of the psychiatric treatment team.

THIS SECTION DESCRIBES WHAT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS POSITION SHOULD CURRENTLY POSSESS.  THIS LIST MAY NOT BE COMPLETE FOR ALL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND SPECIAL DEMANDS

THIS SECTION DESCRIBES HOW AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS POSITION CURRENTLY PERFORMS THE FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION. MODIFICATIONS TO THE MANNER IN WHICH THIS JOB MAY BE PERFORMED WILL BE REVIEWED ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS.

 1. Ability to sit and stand (one-third of the shift) and walk (two-thirds of the shift).

 2. Ability to reach above, at or below waist height, kneel, bend, stoop, turn, twist, and throw (occasionally to frequently).

 3. Ability to see well enough to read written materials. 

 4. Ability to hear well enough to detect noises on the unit and have the ability to discern odors.

 5. Ability to frequently lift and carry 10 lbs.; occasionally 20-50 lbs.

 6. Ability to handle push/pull wheeled carts from 100-200 lbs.

 7. Ability to manipulate small and large tools (electric thermometer, telephone, wheelchair, blood pressure cuffs, walkers, paper punch, Addressograph, restraints, staplers, EKG machine, copy machine, etc.)

 8. Ability to spend 95% of the work day inside in temperatures varying from 60-90 degrees F., where noise levels range from low to high and the ability to spend 5% of the work day outside in temperatures varying from 0-110 degrees F.

 9. Ability to frequently handle hazardous/infectious waste.

10. Ability to work in an environment where chemicals are frequently used for cleaning, where mechanical and electrical hazards may occasionally be present and where dust, mist and steam are frequently generated in housekeeping tasks.

11. Ability to work at a rapid pace and perform a variety of repetitive duties.

12. Ability to respond to exposure to blood and body fluids.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND OTHER WORK AIDES:

THIS SECTION DESCRIBES THOSE MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND OTHER WORK AIDES AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS POSITION MUST BE ABLE TO USE.

 1. Medical and nursing equipment and supplies.

 2. Telephone, paging system and cell phone.

 3. Beeper.

 4. Policies, procedures, plans and program manuals.

 5. Computer and various software packages.

 6. Addressograph machine.

 7. HCS Software

 8. Copy machine.

Job Requirements

::

Education:   Current R.N. license in the District of Columbia. Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program and current certification as a nurse practitioner and N.P. licensed in good standing in the District of Columbia.

Experience:  A minimum of three (3) years experience as a R.N. in a psychiatric health care facility preferred.

Licensure: Registered Nurse/Nurse Practitioner.

Additional Requirements:   Must demonstrate professional accountability.  Will practice and support established policies and procedures, perform assessment, determine diagnosis and implement therapeutic approaches to a psychiatric population, communicate promptly with physicians when problems are identified and collaborate and consult with physicians regarding provision of care to patients. Current certification in CPR and knowledge of crisis prevention instruction.
