Senior Creative Retoucher

Tjarksandtjarks Friendly, MD (Onsite) Full-Time

As senior creative retoucher, you will be responsible for supporting the Creative Director with the running of the retouching team, along with completing creative and technical retouching tasks to the highest standard. You will be passionate about imagery and retouching, and will have solid experience in food and/or beverage packaging with an exceptional eye for detail. This role will require you to demonstrate your artistic flair by creating digitally beautiful compositions with an understanding of the technical and colour work requirements. You will be able to manage your own workload and are able to hit deadlines within an extremely fast-paced art studio.

Overall Responsibility:

Retouch responsibilities:

  • To produce creative, accurate and beautiful images to tight deadlines and within budget.
  • Provide retouching estimates and support team members.
  • Photographic responsibilities including simple ingredient/food shot photography.
  • Responsible for product imagery, processing, retouching, comping and image evaluation.
  • Colour correction and creating natural looking images including full image composing with an understanding of creating light, shade and integration.
  • Evaluate designs to identify where retouching can maximise the image.
  • Manage a high volume of work at a fast pace to a consistently high standard, ensuring that all requirements of the brief are met within timescale and budget.
  • Liaise with account managers and provide full details of images used for invoicing purposes.
  • Ensure file construction is in line with best practice and bespoke company requirements.

Technical and brand guardianship:

  • Brand guardianship – manage consistency checks and alignment, with full understanding of master elements and brand style guide requirements, and application.
  • Improve brand knowledge to be able to problem solve and recognise the requirements for each brand, and track large SKU numbers for brand consistency.
  • Support and manage where necessary master asset guidance and building, ensuring technical accuracy.
  • Upskill RT team in technical knowledge, including colour work and repro requirements.
  • Complete technical checks, and advise the team on particular jobs where required.
  • Work in conjunction with the artwork department on technical imaging problem solving where required.
  • Technical knowledge on print specifications and application, adjust retouching to suit technical specifications.

Team responsibilities:

  • Assist the Creative Director in setting a new standard for quality and independence in the team.
  • Enhance and work with the Creative Director to create an engaging, inclusive, and inspiring culture; be on hand to support and share knowledge with team members.
  • Mentor and/or manage retoucher(s) as required and assist with onboarding, training, developing and motivating team members.

General responsibilities:

  • Deputise for the Creative Director as required and be the retouching point person in absence.
  • Grow into the right-hand person for the Creative Director.
  • Champion the company’s core values and high standards.

Job Skills and Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of retouch experience.
  • FMCG packaging retouch/photographic experience.
  • Passionate about retouching/imagery.
  • Understanding of food and/or beverage packaging artwork and demonstration of applying retouching accordingly.
  • Comping ingredients together to create serving suggestions essential.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles of light, shadow, perspective and spatial awareness (for comping).
  • Understanding and application of CMYK, spot conversion, and desktop colour separation (DCS).
  • Portfolio showing quality pieces and various types of retouching.
  • Portfolio showing complex colour correction/channel work desirable.
  • Experience in managing and/or mentoring team members.
  • Used to working in a fast-paced, high-volume creative environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Photoshop/Creative Suite/MAC experience.
  • Knowledgeable about colour work/correction.
  • Knowledgeable about image size/quality and lighting.
  • Highly creative with good visual awareness and a keen eye for detail.
  • Knowledge of digital photography would be advantageous.
  • Experience of applying mid dot% and working with printers ink limitations (total ink coverage) advantageous.
