Thermal Fluids/CFD Analyst

The Thermal Fluids Analyst contributes to the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods to support flow and heat transfer behaviors directly supporting the Natrium sodium-cooled reactor. The analyst will also perform analyses supporting the design of the Natrium reactor and contribute to verification and validation of methods relevant to liquid metal fast reactors.


  • Develops simulations of liquid metal/low Prandtl number flows in the heat transport systems using adequate models and best practices
  • Participates in the design and optimization of systems, structures, and components for performance and safety
  • Participates in the development of methodologies to support reactor safety and transient analyses
  • Consolidates data from the CFD simulations to develop reduced order-models for reactor thermal hydraulic analyses
  • Interfaces with other engineering groups performing aspects of component, system, fuel, and control system design and related thermal-hydraulic testing
  • Performs validations to establish best practices in the application of CFD methods to liquid metal flow and heat transfer in the reactor design
  • Perform analyses using first principles and fundamental Thermal hydraulics principles to evaluate designs and other thermal hydraulic behaviors for the Natrium reactor.

Key Qualifications and Skills

  • Advanced degree in nuclear engineering, or mechanical or chemical engineering with emphasis on nuclear systems
  • Experience with Thermal Hydraulic first principles and use of correlations to perform analyses and evaluations of designs and phenomena
  • 2 - 5 years experience with commercial CFD code STAR-CCM+
  • Knowledge of different modeling techniques with an ability to navigate the modeling choices relative to the objectives of a simulation and the computational resources
  • Experience in the development and application of CFD models to simulate nuclear systems or similarly complex thermal systems in coursework or research
  • Turbulent heat transport in low Prandtl number problems a plus
  • Knowledge of correlation development to be used in reduced order modeling tools
  • Experience with an object-oriented programming language (Java, Python, C++)
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork
