State Trooper Recruit/ Lateral 24-04
Troopers work in a wide variety of law enforcement fields and, later in their careers are eventually able to request assignments that fit their personal interests. General areas of enforcement include rural law enforcement, highway law enforcement, near-urban patrol work, and serious criminal investigations. The Alaska State Trooper/Alaska Wildlife Trooper position is among the most demanding of any law enforcement agency.
WHERE YOU WILL BE DOING IT
Trooper recruits will be stationed in one of our three training posts after completion of their academy. Our three training posts are located in Fairbanks, Palmer/Wasilla, and Soldotna. The Alaska Department of Public Safety Training Academy is in Sitka, Alaska.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT
The Alaska State Troopers/Alaska Wildlife Troopers serve primarily as rural police officers. Alaska does not have counties, Sheriff's Offices, or Deputies, requiring Troopers to provide complete law enforcement services for areas outside of the traditional "city limits" of most Alaska cities. Some Troopers choose to serve in very rural areas, where the only transportation is by air, riverboat, snow machine, or four-wheeler. Some choose to remain on the road system, in semi-rural areas. While others choose to live in Southeast Alaska, where travel options include both air and ferry, and town sizes vary from under a thousand to over 35,000.

General Overview of Job Requirements
The following job qualifications are stated in general terms for purposes of this job posting only. Applicants will be evaluated based on Alaska Administrative Code 13 AAC 85: Minimum Standards for Police Officers as well as the Alaska Department of Public Safety Background and Selection Requirements.
STATE TROOPER RECRUIT
General Qualifications
Must be a citizen of the United States of America.
Must be 21 years of age or older at the start of the academy. Must be conversant in both spoken and written English.
Must possess a high school diploma or have passed a General Education Development (GED) test.
Not disqualified from any portion of a prior background investigation for this job class in the last twelve months.
Driving Record
Must possess a valid driver's license issued within the United States or its Territories.
Must be free of excessive moving violations and recent license actions (canceled, revoked, suspended, limited, or SR-22 requirement).
Drug Misconduct
Drug misconduct is closely scrutinized and recent drug use may be cause for elimination from the hiring process, including:
* Marijuana use within the last year.
* Use of illegal narcotics within the last ten years.
* Manufacture/sale of illegal narcotics as an adult.
* Drug misconduct while employed in a law enforcement position.
* Prescription drug use without a prescription unless there was an immediate, pressing, or emergency medical circumstance to justify the use.
Criminal History
Adult criminal history is closely scrutinized and the following MAY be cause for elimination from the hiring process:
* Felony conduct with sufficient evidence available for submission to the DA for prosecution.
* Misdemeanor convictions within the last ten years.
* Any conviction related to domestic violence.
* Any criminal charges within the last twelve months.
* Has not been on court-ordered probation within three years of application date.
Professional Conduct
The below requirements pertain to incidents occurring on duty or off duty. While employed as a peace officer, fire marshal, correctional officer, Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO), Court Services Officer (CSO), military police officer, licensed security guard or officer, or similar position anywhere or in any jurisdiction (pertains to incidents occurring on duty or off duty). The applicant must be free of:
* Misconduct (including misuse of official position or authority)
* Perjury
* Excessive use of force.
* Dishonesty
* Termination for cause or resignation under threat of discharge.
* Police certification denied or revoked by the APSC or the equivalent licensing authority in another jurisdiction.
ALASKA STATE TROOPER (Lateral)
Same qualifications as STATE TROOPER RECRUIT (above) plus the following:
Currently employed in the Department of Public Safety as a State Trooper Recruit, at least six months experience as a State Trooper Recruit, satisfactory completion of Department of Public Safety Field Training and determined by the Executive Director of the Alaska Police Standards Council to be eligible to possess a police officer "Basic Certificate" issued by the Council.
* OR-
Possession of, or eligible for reinstatement of, an active police officer certificate issued by the Alaska Police Standards Council;
* OR-
Twelve months of work experience as a police officer AND possession of an active police officer certificate issued by a jurisdiction outside the State of Alaska that is recognized by the Alaska Police Standards Council.
DEFINITIONS
For purposes of the minimum qualifications for this job class:
Convictions or court-ordered probation are recognized either by a civilian court in Alaska, the United States, or another state or territory or by a military court.
Misdemeanors are recognized as:
* a crime classified as a misdemeanor in Alaska at the time the crime was committed.
* a crime committed in another jurisdiction for which there was a conviction in that jurisdiction by a civilian or military court if that crime has elements similar to those of a misdemeanor under Alaska law at the time the offense was committed.
A crime of domestic violence means an offense that:
* is a misdemeanor or felony under Federal or State Law; and
* has, as an element, the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim.
Qualifying work experience as a police officer is defined as active employment in a police force organized by a state or a political subdivision of a state whose basic purpose and function is to maintain peace and order and prevent and investigate criminal offenses. Experience performing police functions while serving in the Armed Forces is not considered qualifying work experience.IMPORTANT NOTE

NOTIFICATION OF NEXT PHASE-
Within five (5) business days after the submission of your job application, applicants who meet minimum qualifications, department requirements, or met lateral qualifications, will receive an email message from @guardianalliancetechnologies.com. As part of the hiring process, Alaska State Troopers conducts a thorough background investigation of all candidates using the web-based Guardian platform to securely collect all required information and documentation for your investigation within 15 days of receiving the link. All applicants will be required to utilize this online portal by first creating a log-in for the portal, then following the applicant instructions. Users will be required to use this online portal, and all necessary documents are required to be uploaded into this portal by the applicant. Users will need to use the Chrome web browser on a computer.
Applicants can expect to pay for airfare and lodging while in Anchorage for testing. The Final Physical Fitness Testing (PFT) will be submitted via a ZendTo link that will be provided at a later time. All PFT's will be due about a week before your in-person testing in Anchorage. The next three testing weeks are December 2-6, 2024, February 3-7, 2025, and March 24-28 (the February and March testing dates may change).
OUT OF STATE AIRFARE REIMBURSEMENT
Out of State applicants now have the option to have their airfare reimbursed up to $750.00 by the Recruitment Unit. Reimbursements will only be made for applicants that pass their PFT and complete their testing week in Anchorage. Contact the recruitment unit for more details of the airfare reimbursement.
