Come create the technology that helps the world act together

Nokia is committed to innovation and technology leadership across mobile, fixed and cloud networks. Your career here will have a positive impact on people’s lives and will help us build the capabilities needed for a more productive, sustainable, and inclusive world.

We challenge ourselves to create an inclusive way of working where we are open to new ideas, empowered to take risks and fearless to bring our authentic selves to work.

The team you’ll be part of

The pandemic has highlighted how important telecoms networks are to society. Nokia’s Network Infrastructure group is at the heart of a revolution to bring more and faster network capacity to people worldwide through our ambition, innovation, and technical expertise.

The Optical Networks Subsystems R&D team is seeking an Advanced Packaging Engineer to engage in the research and development of high-performance optical front-end modules based on silicon-photonic integrated circuits, broadband integrated circuits and DSPs, for coherent or direct-detect fiber communication . As an Advanced Packaging Engineer, you have responsibility for the hands-on development of packaging assembly processes involved in high-speed optical transceivers, from prototyping and testing, through hand-off to production. As a member of our Advanced Packaging team, you’ll be working alongside experienced technical team leads and designers with strong records of delivering innovative photonic device designs into production.

What you will learn and contribute to

As part of our team, you will:

  • Develop state-of-art packaging technologies for photonic integrated circuits (PICs).

  • Design and simulate the performance of optical assemblies, with due considerations of the interface between PICs and package, as well as manufacturing tolerances.

  • Collaborate with all other functional teams in the organization to deliver co-designed and co-optimized photonics systems. Interface closely with the R&D team on new product definition and introduction.

  • Build prototype assemblies using in-house tooling and characterize the performance of these components.

  • Understand the details of the manufacturing processes at the Contract Manufacturers (CM), evaluating and clearly communicating their capabilities and limitations to the design team.

  • Determine what tests and metrology are required for process improvement activities .

  • Perform the data analysis required to correlate process design with measurements.

  • Work with contract manufacturers to determine Design Rules for Manufacturing, and support the New Product Introduction (NPI) into the CMs.

Your skills and experience

You have:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, optics and photonics, chemistry, metallurgy, electronics, or similar engineering and scientific fields and/or 5+ years equivalent practical work experience.

  • Intuitive mechanical, thermal and electrical engineering knowledge.

  • Critical thinking and debugging knowledge.

  • Good Project management skills.

  • Solid written communication, presentation and documenting skills.

  • Experience in R&D process development .

  • Exposure to a volume manufacturing setting.

  • Experience in the semiconductor chip and wafer-level back-end processing, assembly, and/or packaging.

  • Experience with optical and electromagnetic simulation tools.

  • Willingness to travel if needed.

It would be nice if you also had:

  • Experience working with optical components and transceiver products.

  • Experience with optical assembly techniques and equipment.
