Kforce has a client in search of a Network Architect/Engineer in Fairfax, VA. Key Tasks:
  • Analyze the historical circuit connectivity data for the USGS sites identified/prioritized by the USGS Task Order Manager (TOM) for this study. Task will include a review of monthly bandwidth utilization reports for each circuit from Jan 2019 to present
  • Identify number of circuits connecting to a site, where they connect, what are the circuit identifying numbers, type of equipment used to connect; Documenting critical information (make, model serial number, network cards, connections, etc.), primary purpose, and cost per month, annual cost, etc.
  • Diagram how each site connects into the USGS network
Develop site questionnaire that at a minimum identifies:
  • Mission area and number of personnel supported
  • Critical resources required to do their mission
  • Applications they use, external links, external resources, local servers (names, type, hardware, use, etc.)
  • Future initiatives
  • External collaborator
  • Known problems or access issues, application issues, network connectivity problems, date of problems, frequency of problems, time of problems
  • Telework issues or limitations while teleworking
  • Once coordinated by the Gov TOM, interview site IT specialist, Key Personnel (i.e. Site Center Director, technicians and scientists)
  • Diagram where critical resources are located and how each site accesses those resources
  • Conduct operations impact analysis of network server reduction, data consolidation and cloud hosting on site operations
  • Develop Return on Investment (ROI) cost analysis of network server reduction, data consolidation and cloud hosting of current on-site operations
  • Conduct circuit bandwidth analysis based on historical data and projected change in resource locations and availability


  • Minimum of 8-10 years of enterprise network security experience (firewall, Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDPs), log management reporting solutions)
  • Planning and deployment of new network security systems
  • Experiences with Resolution of tier 2 trouble incidents for firewalls, secure e-mail gateways, email encryption technologies, intrusion prevention systems (IPS), and network forensics tools
  • Able to configure, administer, and maintain multiple vendor firewalls and Network Devices
  • Able to design, architect, and troubleshoot complex networks with security devices within security boundary; Knowledge of routing and switching fundamentals and products is essential
  • Practical experience supporting Juniper, Palo Alto, Cisco and or HP appliance
  • Practical experience with Splunk or comparable logging system for troubleshooting
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, set priorities, and give attention to detail and quality, flexible, strong organizational and time management skills, ability to multitask, ability to work individually and with a team, positive attitude, self-motivated, reliable, trustworthy, strong interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and ability to handle stress in professional manner
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and effective in interfacing with internal and external customers
