Work at a Glance: Keen legal mind with passion for communities
- Reviewing contracts and approving or advising on edits required prior to execution; and completing contract reviews to ensure the organization is protected from unnecessary risk as it contracts for goods/services and the contracts comply with regulatory requirements.
- Drafting new contracts, as needed; and advising on revisions to the NeighborWorks America form contracts, memoranda of understanding, and other agreements.
- Reviewing and revising or approving grant agreements and cooperative agreements in which NeighborWorks America is often the grantor and sometimes the grantee
- Providing counsel to colleagues across the organization on areas including: legal and regulatory compliance, contracts and their interpretation, federal grants, intellectual property, privacy and data security, and other topics
- Advising on the creation, revision, and implementation of policy at the organization - including by researching best practices and industry trends.
- Supporting the development and delivery of training and other informational programs for staff to improve staff awareness of essential legal principles and their application in the context of work at the organization.
- Supporting the Office of General Counsel on its compliance program by researching applicable laws and regulations, legal trends, and emerging issues

Required Minimum Qualifications:
(a) Education: A J.D. from an accredited law school, and member in good standing of a state bar, and either a member of the Washington, DC bar or able to join the Washington, DC bar within one year of hire
(b) Experience: 5-7 years of relevant work experience as a practicing attorney, preferably with a focus on contracts law, federal grantmaking, non-profit organizations or employment/labor law
(c) Licenses, Certifications: None specified.
(d) Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of the principles of corporate law and procedures.
- Demonstrated skill in legal analysis, research, and writing.
- Advanced proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Pro
- Strong communication skills and ability to message effectively to a variety of audiences
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail in finished work
- Demonstrated commitment to the NeighborWorks America values of integrity, accountability, stewardship, diversity, and results
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others of diverse backgrounds and successfully interact with people at all levels within and outside the organization

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference for candidates with practice experience in the areas of contract law, employment and labor law, data privacy and data security
Working Conditions:
(a) Travel: less than 10%
(b) Physical/Sensory Demands:
- Fast paced working environment requiring quick decisions within areas of responsibility
- Extensive computer usage, including frequent video conferencing in a "camera on" environment
- Telephone communication
- Ability to lift 30 pounds
(c) Hybrid - Work from home 3 days a week
Salary Range: $120,000 - $140,000
The salary offered for the role will be based on a variety of factors, including geographic location, internal equity, and the candidate's qualifications/professional experience.

Office of General Counsel
The Office of the General Counsel serves as the principal legal counsel to NeighborWorks America, its Board of directors, officers and staff on matters of legal or public policy significance that relate to the Corporation's programs and operations. This includes coordinating outside counsel, filing licensing/tax exemption documents, and reviewing contracts. The office ensures compliance with Federal, state, and local agencies. As the Corporate Secretary, the office also prepares and maintains all official corporate documents, records, and meeting minutes.
