Position Highlights

The MMT Observatory (MMTO), a joint venture of the University of Arizona and the Smithsonian Institution, is seeking to fill the position of Research Engineering Technician III (Staff Technician). The Observatory operates the 6.5-meter telescope atop the summit of Mt. Hopkins (8550-ft), which is approximately 40 air miles south of Tucson. The MMTO uses state of the art computer controlled electronics in an industrial setting. This position is based at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) base camp at 670 Mt. Hopkins Road in Amado. The typical work schedule will be four or five days per week of onsite work. Some projects will also require work at the U of A campus offices located in the Steward Observatory building.

We are seeking a motivated hands-on person with both practical skills and knowledge of industrial best practices to work safely around cranes, forklifts, and other industrial equipment and in mobile aerial work platforms. The ability to fabricate non-structural steel assemblies (brackets, carts, pump mounts, etc.) and strong communication skills are also required.

The successful candidate will provide support for recoating the 6.5m Primary Mirror on the summit of Mt. Hopkins. This support will include modification and repair of existing equipment, deploying process improvements, full scale testing, completing the coating process, and returning the equipment to the FLWO base camp facility.

This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Fabricate steel weldments for pipe supports, storage racks, and handling equipment.
  • Forklift and overhead crane operation to transport and position aluminization equipment; this includes loading/unloading equipment from enclosed cargo trucks and trailers.
  • Support coating tests at Base Camp facility including operation of vacuum pumps, connection/disconnection of equipment, and process monitoring.
  • Maintain coating equipment, including rough and high vacuum pumps.
  • Communicate with and assist the project manager with solving technical issues.
  • Maintain and contribute to a safe working culture.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
Physical Requirements:
  • Able to transport/lift up to 25 pound objects, repetitively.
  • Able to work safely above 8000 ft.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical associate's degree
  • Experience working independently with minimal supervision on complex technical tasks
  • Experience performing complex mechanical installations per engineering direction
  • Experience communicating clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Experience with machine tools such as mills, lathes, etc.
  • Experience or training in use of overhead cranes and forklifts to move large, multi-ton objects
  • Experience or training in use of mobile aerial work platforms and fall protection systems
