The Army National Guard is a governor’s go-to resource during a community’s time of need. As a Public Affairs Specialist, you’ll get to put the spotlight on all the good work the Guard is doing, whether it’s disaster response, providing security for a major event, training or supporting missions overseas, or promoting a colleague who embodies the spirit of the ultimate Citizen Soldier® – a great leader who is giving back to the community in some way.

The Public Affairs Specialist participates in and assists with the supervision and administration of public affairs programs through news releases, newspaper articles, web-based material, and photographs for use in military and civilian news media. Public Affairs Specialists learn how to research, prepare, and distribute news releases; gather information for news programs and publications; develop ideas for news articles; conduct interviews; and write news releases, feature articles, and editorials. You may also conduct media training.

Some of the Skills You’ll Learn
• News, feature, and sports writing and research
• Newspaper design and production
• Interviewing techniques
• Photojournalism (photography journalism)

Helpful Skills
• Interest in English, journalism, communications, computers, and photography
• Ability to speak clearly in front of an audience
• Detail oriented
• Enjoy researching facts and issues for news stories
• Can write clearly and concisely

Plus, you’ll be building a better future. The skills you learn as a Public Affairs Specialist will help prepare you for a future with newspapers, magazines, wire services, and radio and television stations. You'll be qualified to pursue a career as a journalist, newscaster, disc jockey, writer, director, producer, editor, or correspondent.

Earn While You Learn
