Job Description

The Counsel for Schaeffler Group USA Inc. is a regional counsel role.  This position will share responsibility with the rest of the U.S. sub-region's legal team to represent Schaeffler in the U.S. via supporting the regional business units (i.e., Industrial, Industrial-Aerospace, and Automotive) and the various corporate functions (e.g., Purchasing, Human Resources, etc.). This role will have responsibility for specific internal clients and work closely with the rest of our regional legal team (three attorneys in the U.S., one attorney in Mexico and three attorneys in Brazil) and our corporate counterparts based in Germany. A qualified candidate would be expected to provide all five different types of support to their internal clients and the Legal Department. We are a lean team, and each attorney in the group is expected to be able to work independently, knowing when to seek support.   Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Contract negotiation
  • Claim management
  • Litigation and outside counsel management
  • Client counseling on legal requirements and legal risks, and
  • Legal process development and legal workflow improvement
  • Corporate representation
  • Analyze and maintain standard contracts and other business documents
  • Assist in contract negotiations
  • Assist in drafting, implementing and administrating legal policies and procedures
  • Draft and review contracts
  • Keep abreast of legislative changes
  • Preparing and presenting training on various topics to the business groups

Job Requirements

Qualified candidates will have:
  • Law degree from an accredited school plus admitted to the Bar
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written
  • Three to five years previous experience in one of the following: general corporate law, contract law, employment law or litigation
  • Ability to work independently as well as a productive member of a team
  • Familiarity and background in litigation
  • Experience in contract drafting and negotiation
  • International law experience a plus
  • Must exhibit excellent research, writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to lead projects, setting goals and objectives for cross-functional teams
  • Ability to travel
