Palo Verde Behavioral Health (PVBH) is a 84 bed  private psychiatric facility providing inpatient and intensive outpatient psychiatric services through treatment programs tailored to our patients needs for the purpose of creating positive outcomes. PVBH will build on the excellent skills of our current Psychiatrists, licensed registered nurses, clinical social workers and licensed professional counselors to support these programs.

Position Description:

The Health Information (Coder) participates as an integral member of the records management team by ensuring the quality maintenance of patient information/medical records, within all laws, rules and regulations of federal and state licensing agencies, and TJC standards for the quality of patient care.  The Health Information Coder- has the primary responsibility of assigning accurate ICD-10-CM codes upon patient discharge (inpatient and outpatient). Communicates with physicians for any related coding questions and assists with chart completion. Other daily duties in include assembling medical records, analyzing discharged records, files records, completes monthly statistical reports, answers telephones, and processes release of information requests.

Job Requirements

::Essential Job Duties:

  1. Abstracts and enter Admitting/Discharge Diagnosis for inpatient/outpatient with ICD-10 diagnosis codes.

  2. Enters correct ICD-10 codes within 4 days of discharge as per corporate, facility and 3rd party payer regulations.

  3. Notifies Director of HIM for missing medical records or information needed to effectively meet the need of the department.

  4. Complies with corporate standards of ethical coding and Queries Physicians appropriately.

  5. Notifies Director of HIM not completed within required time constraints and any problems or unresolved issues.

Job Requirements:

Education:  Graduation from a medical records program preferred; Must be a Certified Professional Coder (CPC); high school graduate or equivalent required. 

Experience: At least one (1) year experience, including ICD-10-CM coding, in healthcare management/medical records or clerical field preferred.

Must be at least 21 years of age and able to obtain and maintain an AZ Class 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card.

  1. Skill in telephone etiquette and paging procedures.

  2. Ability to have effective oral and written communication skills with patients and co-workers

  3. Excellent organizational skills, the ability to pay attention to detail, and develop and maintain effective efficient systems.  

  4. Ability to adhere to safety policies and procedures.

  5. Ability to use good judgment and to maintain confidentiality of information.

  6. Ability to work as a team player and to work in a fast paced environment.
