Senior Program Manager, Andes-Amazon at The Field Museum

Senior Program Manager, Andes-Amazon

The Field Museum Chicago, IL Full-Time

The Field Museums Keller Science Action Center translates museum science and expertise into action for conservation and quality of life. This interdisciplinary center seeks a Senior Program Manager for its Andes-Amazon program, which collaborates with diverse institutions and communities to sustain vibrant cultural and biological conservation landscapes that buffer the planet from climate change and ensure quality of life for local people. One of the main initiatives of the Andes-Amazon program is to conduct rapid inventories, which are surveys of remote wilderness areas that provide social and biological information to decision-makers to help establish effective conservation areas and strengthen environmental governance and coordination. Other major current initiatives include co-development of a biocultural corridor in the four-country, Putumayo-I region; landscape-scale, community-led conservation in Guyana; and integrating community knowledge and perspectives into conservation efforts. Central to all of our initiatives is an inclusive, asset-based, community-centered approach.

The Senior Program Manager will strengthen the Andes-Amazon program by developing and sustaining program supports and structures that increase our potential for success on the ground, including annual and strategic planning, budgeting, meeting design and facilitation, and grant reporting and evaluation. This includes leadership in one or more of the programs initiatives, fostering cross-initiative coordination, and supporting team learning. The Senior Program Manager will be based at the Field Museum in Chicago and report to the Andes-Amazon Program Director; the role includes participation in the Centers senior leaders group and collaboration with members of the Conservation Tools and Chicago Region programs, as well as other points of contact across the Museum. The position involves travel to South America, anywhere from 15-25% of the year, including to project sites and partner meetings and events.

Applicants should include a resume or CV and a cover letter highlighting their qualifications and experiences that make them well suited for this role, and their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with Andes-Amazon team leadership to consolidate and provide ongoing support for program initiatives, including concept and partnership development, annual planning, adaptive management, budgets, publications, and communications
  • Participate in and facilitate internal and external partnerships that help advance the Andes-Amazon program vision and goals
  • Design and facilitate targeted monitoring and evaluation, in coordination with the Centers Evaluation Working Group, including measuring progress toward goals, establishing metrics, designing evaluation instruments, and synthesizing information to be clearly communicated externally
  • Support fundraising and grant writing to strengthen Andes-Amazon initiatives and special projects. Engage with donors as appropriate to support these efforts
  • Contribute to technical reports, publications, and communications materials for dissemination
  • Continue to advance and explore the niches for a natural history museum to have an impact in on-the-ground conservation and community well-being in South America

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience with project, people, and team management, including knowledge of existing tools and best practices
  • Masters degree in conservation science, international relations, education, or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated experience in successful grant writing, project management, and program evaluation
  • Track record of successful collaboration across disciplines and with decision makers and community leaders
  • Experience in facilitating processes for collective decision-making and working in a collaborative team
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish or Portuguese; strong spoken and written English
  • Computer proficiency and strong interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to travel frequently and work some non-traditional hours
