Senior Paralegal, IP

WEX Inc. Portland, ME (Onsite) Full-Time

Reporting to the Vice President, Global Corporate Legal Services, the Senior Paralegal, IP will provide legal support to WEX’s Legal, Technology and Digital (including Product) teams. Specifically, this role will provide oversight of WEX’s IP portfolio in order to ensure WEX’s IP portfolio and assets are managed and protected properly, in compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and in support of WEX’s innovative product development efforts. This role will further facilitate the provision of strategic and tactical advice on WEX’s IP, both existing and new, and support WEX’s Global Corporate Legal Services team in its provision of legal services to WEX stakeholders more broadly.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in IP portfolio oversight and management, have experience in supporting a broader range of corporate legal activities and tasks, and be comfortable collaborating on the resolution of complex, time-sensitive problems in close partnership with a variety of legal and business stakeholders.

How you'll make an impact

  • Oversee WEX’s IP portfolio, including providing guidance on and supporting registration, prosecution, renewal, enforcement and managing litigation (in collaboration with the WEX’s in-house and outside litigation and IP counsel) related to WEX’s trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets - patent experience is preferred.

  • Assist in developing strategies and policies for and in ensuring efficient and effective initial and ongoing protection, maintenance and compliance of WEX’s existing IP portfolio and any new Company inventions and/or innovations.

  • Foster awareness of, collaboration on and respect for the WEX’s IP portfolio and related strategies, policies and processes.

  • Assist with IP due diligence and integration in connection with mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic transactions and engagements, including customer/partner and third-party vendor engagements.

  • Maintain a current understanding of relevant laws, regulations, industry standards and policy trends relevant to WEX’s IP portfolio.

  • Collaborate with and support members of WEX’s Global Corporate Legal Services, including Employment, Procurement and M&A specialists, on executing special projects, project management and organization.

  • Contribute to the development of the WEX Legal Department culture and practices, including assisting with the creation, modification and/or implementation of policies and processes, and assist with other legal projects and matters as may be assigned.

  • Assist in developing training materials and conducting training sessions for internal stakeholders/business teams.

  • Liaise with and oversee external legal advisors when specialized legal advice is needed on IP and other related matters.

Experience you'll bring

  • Education/Certification: Certification or associates degree in paralegal studies (bachelor’s degree preferred).

  • Experience: 5+ years of significant and substantial experience as paralegal/legal assistant in the following areas: IP and corporate transactional matters.

  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. and international IP laws, with a strong track record of managing IP portfolios.

  • In-house legal experience preferred.

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.

  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask, prioritize, and adjust as priorities shift in a fast-paced environment.

  • Commitment to quality through demonstrated accuracy and thoroughness.

  • Ability to work independently, yet still be team-oriented and collaborative.

  • Ability to build strong internal relationships and to act as a trusted resource for business and functional leaders globally.

  • Sound judgment; strong problem-solving skills; ability to clearly make reasoned recommendations; ability to anticipate risk and be proactive in planning and communicating accordingly, including determining who should be informed and engaged.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and GSuite; ability to ramp up quickly on other applications and systems, including document management systems.

  • Must successfully pass a background investigation.

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
