Hang Seng’s Management Trainee Programme offers a holistic development approach, centred around 2 key dimensions, Enterprise and Professional. At the enterprise level, aspiring leaders are immersed in our purpose, values and strategies in fintech and Greater Bay Area business as well as Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives. The professional level focuses on 10 business and function streams. You'll build your core banking knowledge and specialist skills in an inclusive environment and equip yourself with future skills, designed and offered through our expansive and agile learning environment, customised to enhance your development and growth.

The first 24 months of the programme will be about maximising your exposure in order to gain the essential work-related knowledge and skills through rotations across core departments. You'll acquire valuable experience by participating in bank-wide projects and working in cross-functional teams. You'll then leverage your core department rotations and choose a placement area which usually lasts up to 12 months, starting the development of your career in the selected area of expertise. Commercial Banking connects entrepreneurial businesses to opportunities through our relationship managers and digital capabilities. You'll rotate across Relationship Management teams that work directly with clients to support and expand their operations.

Digital Business Services (DBS) Management Trainee (MT) Programme at Hang Seng Bank offers you the opportunity to groom yourself as a fintech-savvy and change talent within a dynamic financial institution as well as developing an entrepreneurial mindset. Throughout the 3-year programme, you will be exposed to a diverse range of responsibilities, from innovative digital projects to providing high-quality operational support across DBS’ core function units. Beyond gaining technical expertise, the DBS MT Programme also empowers you to spearhead bank-wide transformations. The Functional Services MT Programme offers unique broad-based development experience to build core capabilities in one of the two mainstreams, either in Finance or Risk and Compliance. You'll then rotate to areas outside of these mainstreams in functional areas such as Digital Business Services, Audit, middle office in Wealth and Personal Banking and Wholesale Banking.

The Programme prepares you for a strong-focused professional career and opens opportunities across Hang Seng in businesses or functions to suit your interests and skills.

  • Assist in preparing materials for the Bank’s Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO)
  • Work with businesses in managing liquidity and IRRBB risks
  • Take part in the preparation of risk-weighted asset calculations for capital reporting
  • Assist in the capital planning and forecast cycle
Finance Strategy and Execution
  • Support the HASE’s finance functions for implementing the operational risk and control management framework according to HSBC Group guidance
  • Liaise with Operational Risk and provide support and guidance to various Finance teams to ensure that appropriate operational risk and control identification and assessment is undertaken for Finance function in HK and oversea sites
  • Assist in the production of risk and control reports with regard to the advised committee meeting schedules to facilitate management for review and decision making
  • Prepare the Group’s consolidated financial reports including statutory financial statements and published materials relating to interim and final results announcements
  • Prepare HKMA/PRA prudential returns and other reports required by other regulators
  • Prepare financial and regulatory related information to senior management, the Board and various committees
  • Ensure the financial compliance with the relevant regulatory requirements of the Banking Ordinance and HKMA SPMs and guidelines. Also perform accounting and ledger control functions
  • Provide advice and guidance to support the risk policy for managing Financial Reporting Risk. Perform review and challenge to issues, actions and incidents reported by 1st line businesses and functions. Oversee remediation and closure of issues
  • Assist in accounting standards implementation, new product due diligence and provide accounting opinion to businesses
  • Ensure compliance in Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX) in the Bank, including SOX deficiencies reporting and annual certification
  • Conduct periodic assurance reviews within and outside Finance function to ensure adequate controls are in place to mitigate Financial Reporting Risk, also to help improve the effectiveness of the operations within Finance function
Insurance Business Finance
  • Participate in finance and accounting related activities of the insurance operations under the Bank, including financial control, regulatory reporting, forecast & planning, product development & projects and ALCM/capital management
  • Interact with a wide diversity of business or functional departments such as the Actuarial, Investment, Operation and Business Departments
  • Gain an understanding on the Insurance Business Finance Department and the insurance industry specific knowledge
  • Learn the dynamics of how insurance operations' financial results are being incorporated into the Bank-wide bigger picture
Product Control
  • Support the daily and monthly profit/loss and other production tasks related to the Bank's Markets and Securities Service and Markets Treasury to gain knowledge in market products
  • Gain knowledge and practice in performing different controls activities to manage risk, and in understanding the importance of non-financial risk
  • Involve in other ad hoc projects and new product due diligence and have exposure in user acceptance testing for system implementation
Strategic Planning and Stress Testing
  • To understand how management accounting concepts are applied to the Bank's functions, and how your contribution to an accurate and timely management information report could make a difference in senior management's decision on the overall business
  • To develop valuable business analytic skills and understand keys to managing balance sheet risks, allocating resources as well as participate in budgetary preparation and control process
  • To support the identification of risks and opportunities by running financial forecast and stress testing exercises and closely collaborate with different stakeholders within the bank
  • To gain exposure in learning about the Bank's valuation in resolution (VIR) process which involves stress testing, financial projection, and the preparation of the intra-month balance sheet, liquidity forecast as well as capital plan
Wealth and Personal Banking Business Finance
  • Collaborate with WPB business units (including Retail Banking and Wealth Management Businesses) to monitor the implementation of the financial plans
  • Prepare management information to facilitate monitoring and analysis of business performance
  • Work with internal stakeholders across WPB to track and streamline current sales data collection process
  • Support creating concise communication materials and present findings to management
Wholesale Business Finance
  • Prepare timely and accurate management reports, analyze business trend and customer profitability
  • Conduct cost control to ensure expenses and FTEs are within budget and to support business initiatives
  • Collaborate with relevant parties including IT and Operation to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial booking
  • Perform various analysis on business operating results and handle enquiries from Relationship Managers

Risk and Compliance

Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB) Risk

  • Participate in WPB Risk team's Risk Steward and Risk Advisor roles to set the risk appetite for retail lending, as well as monitor the portfolio of WPB products to inform and refine credit policies, procedures and models, via a wide range of risk management governance frameworks and controls
  • Opportunities to understand the model development, monitoring, regulatory reporting, controls and governance process and get to know the latest data analytics solution delivery
Wholesale Credit Risk Management (WCRM)
  • Learn the end-to-end Wholesale Credit Risk Management operating model, as an independent second line of defence. WCRM covers a wide range of aspects: defining risk appetite statement/threshold, establishing credit policies, designing and monitoring controls, managing the end-to-end credit journey from credit approvals, and special credit management, as well as facilitating regulatory monitoring and decision making through analytics
  • Participate in and learn from our subject matter experts on credit underwriting, risk control, portfolio review, model analytics and specialised credit handling
  • Undertake the duty of Financial Crime Compliance Subject Matter Expert Advisory and/or conduct Financial Crime Risk investigations in a professional and efficient manner, so that the bank’s and regulatory standards are fulfilled
  • Keep abreast of new developments and intelligence associated with Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT), Fraud, Anti-Bribery and Corruption, Tax Evasion, as well as Sanctions
Regulatory Compliance
  • Form good partnerships with different business streams and functions to provide professional advice in regulatory compliance matters
  • Have opportunities to interact with regulators in fulfilling regulatory demands
Compliance Assurance
  • Compliance Assurance (CA) sits within the second line of defence (2LoD) and provides independent assurance services, to assist the bank in the timely identification, evaluation, and mitigation of regulatory and financial crime risks
  • Work closely with Chief Risk and Compliance Officers and other Group Compliance Capabilities to deliver time-sensitive independent insight on the management of regulatory, conduct, financial crime and reputational risks, mainly through the assessment of associated controls, to provide assurance to stakeholders of the effectiveness of the Group’s financial crime and regulatory risk management

Global Banking connects large corporations and financial institutions to opportunities through a group of high-level relationship managers and tailored banking solutions. You'll rotate across Relationship Management teams and Product teams during the development programme and learn how to build strong and strategic partnerships with your clients.

You'll also support the driving of various new initiatives in Global Banking, such as new product development.

It plays a key role in operations and business management support for Global Markets (GM), as well as engages in strategic and financing resource planning.
