Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a Principal Product Designer (IC) to help us design useful and compelling experiences in our efforts to become a daily destination for curious people seeking to understand and engage with the world.

Principal Product Designers at The Times are the most prominent and influential individual contributors in our Product Design organization. They are focused on championing cross-team collaboration and communication to achieve cross-functional team goals. Principal Product Designers have successfully guided and executed the design of multiple products or platforms, and will have seen them through over multiple years. This design work has impacted the company's trajectory in a significant way by improving user engagement, quality of experience and internal process). This role lends your skills and expertise to grow and support more junior design team members.

The Core News App team is based in NYC. The Times is in the process of transitioning to hybrid work and we plan to speak with all candidates about where they're based and how they work in a hybrid environment. We are open to remote candidates.

Your Role

As a Principal Product Designer on the Core News App team, you are an innovator who not only raises the design standard within The Times, but also within the design industry as a whole. You'll be leveraging your deep expertise with interaction design to guide the team's evolution of our native experiences for both iOS, Android and related web views. Your job will focus on envisioning how our readers experience our core news app, bringing it to life in ways that leave them feeling knowledgeable, inspired, and curious for exploring more across all The New York Times has to offer. Your work will allow new readers and longtime NYT subscribers to quickly understand how to sift through complex tasks and understand our wide range of content with accessible, responsive, and easy to understand designs. You'll help steward the team around exploring the balance between the creative features we build, coupled with evolving how we build them - inspiring higher quality outcomes from colleagues. Success will require close collaboration with designers, product managers, engineers, researchers and a deep grounding in the behaviors, intentions and goals of our readers.

We value an environment of learning and collaboration. You'll lend your skills and expertise to grow and support more junior design team members and attend regular design rituals where you'll receive and provide critique, and identify opportunities for consistency across the function.

Your Qualifications

Skills

* 10+ years of progressive experience designing digital web or app products.

* Recent experience designing interactive products or tools.

* Master storyteller, creating compelling narratives to communicate to non-designers such as customers, partners, stakeholders.

* Experience with standardizing and streamlining collaboration and handoff process of interaction design and motion work with iOS and Android developers.

* Proven experience defining strategy and design experiences that are part of a larger system while holding familiarity and interaction patterns that stay true to native apps.

* Outstanding ability to move ideas into prototypes that envision the news app into an inspired, refined, and accessible experience for our readers. Experienced in both build design prototypes and pair with iOS and android devs for rapid live prototypes.

* Expert in facilitating agreement through workshopping, brainstorms, and cross-functional collaboration.

You will partner with product designers, product teams and user researchers on initiatives that will help the New York Times reach its product goals and will:

* Develop new product strategy and verticals with senior-level cross functional team members while offering a deep expertise in how design can inform the product strategy.

* Champion feature implementation by providing a user-centered perspective to the team's solution.

* Establish practices that drive toward faster iteration and learning, helping higher impact work launch and increase knowledge and creativity in a function or mission.

* Guide culture changes that increase trust, diversity, and a sense of belonging within a mission or function and within spaces where you show up regularly.

* Guide the growth and development of motivated ICs through collaboration, mentoring and coaching.

* Represent your team's work to leadership within the company while also advocating for the craft and process of product design.

* Contribute to team and product design rituals alongside participating in hiring for design roles within the product design function.
