SUMMARY

The ESS Mechanical engineering lead reports to the product development manager and will be responsible for envisioning, designing, developing, and engineering mechanical enclosures and thermal management systems for utility scale battery energy storage systems. This includes working with internal and external stake holders to understand and refine project and market requirements for implementation. Lead technical efforts and day to day activities among the HW product development team in the mechanical space. Work closely with engineering 3rd parties and suppliers to materialize initiatives. Direct and manage 3rd party engineering resources utilized in the product development process. Serve as subject matter expert for thermal management and enclosures supporting the rest of organization as needed. Develop product and application documentation. This position will specifically focus on Utility scale and C&I energy storage solutions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Envision, design, and engineer thermal management and enclosure systems for battery energy storage systems.

  • Evaluate and select suppliers for HVAC, chillers, cooling plates, enclosures, and other mechanical assemblies.

  • Review battery and power electronics specifications and ensure thermal management and mechanical design are compliant with performance and warranty requirements.

  • Lead product development process by understanding requirements, collaborating with project management, and directing day to day activities of the execution team (in-house and third party).

  • Improve processes, procedures, and tools used in product development.

  • Review/coordinate design and other technical information from suppliers and contractors.

  • Train/mentor other less experienced staff.

  • Maintain knowledge of applicable codes, standards, certifications, and applications in the Energy Storage industry.

  • Expect 20-30% travel.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EDUCATION

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience: Bachelors degree in Mechanical engineering with a minimum of ten (10) years of related experience in the field. Must have Power Industry experience (power generation or utilities). Experience developing power electronics, battery modules, or similar products. Experience working with ODM partners to launch products to market. Experience leading contractors and suppliers as part of project development process.

  • Technology/Product/Other knowledge and skills

  • Good understanding of battery systems and power electronics

  • Design thermal management system including load and flow calculations, CFD modeling, equipment selection, and 3D modeling of piping/duct work.

  • Design and 3D modeling of enclosure mechanical systems.

  • Experience with PLCs, RTUs, and/or industrial control systems.

  • Good project management skills to lead initiatives to completion.

  • Ability to work closely with and influence cross-functional teams.

  • Highly competitive, self-starter that can work both individually and in a group setting.

  • Reasoning Ability: Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions, read and understand network, mechanical and electrical drawings.

  • Computer Skills: Proficient in MS Office, Autocad, 3D modeling software, and ANSYS (or similar CFD SW)
