Overview
Under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Pharmacist(s) and following all Federal and State regulations, prepares and distributes medications and maintains drug inventory and patient records.

Qualifications
Education:
  • Education equivalent to graduation from high school or GED is required.
  • Must successfully complete on-the-job narcotics training within three months of hire.
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
  • Possesses a current State of Illinois Technician license, with Certified designation if required by the Illinois Pharmacy Practice Act. Applicants may not begin work without proof of licensure and certification (if required).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board-(PTCB) or the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is required by the second pharmacy technician license renewal except for:
    • Pharmacy technicians who obtained initial licensure prior to January 1, 2008.
    • Pharmacy students enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board-(PTCB) or the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) highly preferred.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Controlled Substances Diversion Prevention Certificate (or equivalent) required within 12 months of hire
Experience:
  • One (1) year Pharmacy Technician experience with Memorial Health System required. Previous Narcotic Technician experience strongly preferred.
  • Five (5) years Pharmacy Technician experience in a hospital setting preferred.
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Possesses a highly-developed problem solving ability to work through complex situations.
  • Understands technical complexities of the department and uses this knowledge to adapt to and work in any situation.
  • Possesses the ability and desire to train, (as defined by department standards) and develop lesser-experienced pharmacy technicians. Imparts both didactic content as well as models behavioral standards for trainees.
  • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication, problem solving, basic math, and customer relations skills.
  • Demonstrates basic computer knowledge, with the ability to operate keyboard and mouse and access and store information into an electronic database.

  • Demonstrates commitment to safety in all elements of daily practice.
  • Ability to push, pull, and transport up to 50 lbs. and stand/walk for long periods of tim e.
Responsibilities
  • Performs advanced Pharmacy Technician duties within the Pharmacy (or other applicable area), either at a fixed or rotating workstation or schedule approved by management. Applies highly developed knowledge and niche expertise of specialty products, medical compositions, and processes relating to new or complex drugs or other formularies.
  • Organizes and fills order requests in order of priority, clarifying issues with Pharmacist(s) as needed. Upon completion, routes order to Pharmacist for review. Upon pharmacists' approval, delivers completed order to requestor or otherwise notifies appropriate party.
  • Maintains security of Controlled Substances at all times, according to hospital standards and federal/state regulations.
  • Inventories and maintains the appropriate levels of stock, replenishing as necessary. Advises Pharmacist(s) and other interested parties of depletion or low levels of critical medications and supplies.
  • Adheres to all necessary sanitation and sterility requirements in preparing, filling, labeling, and distributing medication and related supplies.
  • Utilizes various online databases to access patient information, drug information, policy and procedures, and other related items.


  • Accurately manages Controlled Substance Inventories - signs out product for Automated Dispensing Cabinet refill, Batch and Patient Specific Compounding and patient specific labels.
  • Receives Controlled Substance Orders from the wholesaler and ensures safe and accurate addition to Automated Dispensing System inventory.
  • Effectively manages Controlled Substance discrepancies and resolutions through collaboration with Pharmacy and Nursing Management.
  • Demonstrates competence of Automated Dispensing System functions including, but not limited to, report generation and cabinet loads and unloads.
  • Inventories and identifies expired or otherwise unusable drugs and provides for their safe and secure disposal through daily monitoring and compliance with monthly inspection assignments.
  • Maintains compliance with federal and state requirements for record keeping of ALL electronic and paper pharmacy documents. This includes, but is not limited to, all fill lists and records, Automated Dispensing System receipts and records, and controlled substance documentation.
  • Assists Pharmacy Operations Manager and Director of Pharmacy in maintaining and updating Controlled Substance standard operating procedures
  • Provides exceptional training for lesser-experienced staff members as needed. Serves as a mentor to all new pharmacy technicians and serves as a role model for all staff. Assists Pharmacy Operations Manager in developing and updating written training programs and train/qualify new personnel in Controlled Substance handling.
  • Identifies areas for process improvement and makes recommendations to management for approval.
  • Demonstrates safety in ALL aspects of work including patient safety, compliance with policy and procedures that assure employee safety, compliance with OSHA standards for handling hazardous substances, compliance with USP standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
