Job Description

Maxim Healthcare Services is currently seeking a Registered Nurse for Intensive Care Unit to provide services at the NIH in Bethesda, MD. The Clinical Center is the hospital of the NIH consisting of 240 inpatient beds, 90 day hospital stations and numerous specialty ambulatory care areas. Adjacent to the hospital facilities are research laboratories.
The Clinical Center requires supplemental nursing staff to meet the needs of the patient community. Staff will be assigned to work within a program of care whose primary purpose is to provide safe nursing care in a biomedical research environment. Units or programs of care include Ambulatory Care, Critical Care, Pediatrics, Med-Surg, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplant, Telemetry, Behavioral Health, Neurology, Procedure and Vascular Service, Operating Room, and Radiology

Experience/Qualifications Needed:
2-3 recent years of strong Critical Care experience required.
ACLS preferred.
Have at least 2 years recent relevant clinical experience in direct hospital-based patient care in the specialty assigned.
Possess a current, valid and unrestricted RN license to practice, and not have a suspended license in any state in the United States.
Be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Shall be able to read, write and speak English to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.
Schedule:
Full Time Dayshift
Prefer 6 x (12) hr, 1 x (8) hr shift or 4 x (12) hr and 4 x (8) shifts every 2 weeks
Registered Nurse Specific Duties:
Services will be to provide direct patient care in a biomedical research environment. Services shall also be performed in accordance with Clinical Center established principles, practices, and ethics of the medical and nursing professions. The standards of performance for all agency staff shall reflect the degree of care, skill, and learning expected of a reasonably prudent registered nurse provider in the profession. The duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Serve as team member on assigned shifts.
Be responsible for direct patient care and clinical oversight of nursing assistants.
Use appropriate interview and observation skills to obtain and record pertinent patient information.
Use, instruct and supervise others in the use of simple and specialized equipment appropriate to the clinical area.
Assist in identifying patients' needs and implementing the plan of care for each assigned patient.
Document care given and the patient's response to the care provided in the patients’ medical record and the Clinical Research Information System.
Properly prepare patients for physical examination, diagnostic tests and/or procedures.
Assist in patient/family education about disease processes, pre- and post-operative care, diagnostic procedures, equipment use, health maintenance, illness prevention, and actual and potential adverse reactions to medications.
Communicate patient's progress to patients, families, and members of the health care team.
Recognize, report, and respond appropriately to any changes in a patient's condition.
Administer medications via oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, topical, rectal, respiratory and intravenous routes.
Administer research treatments and medications according to the medical order and document patient response according to the protocol
Utilize barcoding equipment to administer medications, obtain specimens and transfuse blood products.
Perform treatments as ordered using aseptic technique and assist with procedures when necessary.
Interpret basic laboratory test reports and blood gas readings. Inform the charge nurse and/or health care providers as appropriate.
Complete administrative forms and reports accurately and promptly.
