JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Behavior Specialist
Reports to: Chief Student Services Officer

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in special education and a valid teaching license in North
Carolina. Minimum of 2 years working with students with disabilities and experience with
working with students with challenging behavior.

Purpose of Position:
The behavior specialist plays a crucial role in supporting students with significant behavioral
needs. Collaborating closely with the chief student services officer, the director of school safety, the student support team, and school personnel, the specialist ensures that staff receive the training and resources necessary to effectively address behavioral challenges. This position requires a deep understanding of positive behavior supports, enabling the specialist to assist individuals and staff in developing effective behavior plans. Serving as a resource for EC staff, interventionists, and administrators, the behavior specialist provides targeted support for students facing substantial behavioral and emotional challenges. By fostering a collaborative environment, the specialist trains and guides school staff on behavior management techniques, intervention strategies, and best practices.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with school staff, parents, and community organizations to assess student needs and develop interventions for those facing behavioral challenges that affect their access to the general and extended content curricula.
  • Attend meetings to discuss the needs of students experiencing behavioral issues (IEP meetings, MDRs, threat assessments)
  • Assist educators in documenting behavioral data, conducting functional behavioral assessments, creating behavior intervention plans, and monitoring their effectiveness.
  • Provide consultative support for individual students through observation, interviews, teacher training, intervention planning, and follow-up.
  • Support students during transitions, including those to and from alternative programs.
  • Help determine appropriate actions for students who may need disciplinary removal due to serious issues (e.g., drugs, weapons, bodily injury) or manifestation determinations.
  • Deliver staff development training in areas such as Crisis Prevention (CPI), Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), and classroom management.
  • Offer direct support to teachers through observations and coaching sessions aimed at developing adaptive skills and replacing undesirable behaviors.
  • Assist teachers in recognizing behavioral trends that disrupt classroom instruction.
  • Participate in Exceptional Children leadership meetings with the student services leadership team and EC leads from each school.
  • Provide instruction and interventions for identified PRC 29 students, staff, and other service providers.
  • Train and supervise behavior technicians in delivering direct support to PRC 29 students and in implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
  • Collaborate with school psychologists, counselors, and social workers to address the social, emotional, and mental health needs of students with disabilities across the district.
  • Assist with students in alternative learning or therapeutic support programs.
  • Coach new and selected EC teachers on appropriate behavior interventions tailored to students' disabilities.
  • Assist in the implementation of school laws and relevant statutes regarding the education of students with disabilities.
