The Princeton University Art Museum, one of the nation's preeminent cultural institutions in an academic setting, seeks applications for the position of Associate Director for Information and Technology. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within the context of an art museum that is intimate in scale yet expansive in scope, supporting one of the most dynamic exhibition programs on any college campus and a program of educational activities and events that continues to grow in energy and impact each year.

Reporting to the Museum Director, the Associate Director for Information and Technology (AD) is a key member of the Museum's senior management team and sets the direction for a sustainable integrated technological program and information management strategy, which positions the Museum for future advancements in the museum and technology fields. The AD leads one of six major departments within the Museum and works with the Director and fellow ADs to create a technology environment that supports the Museum's mission and Strategic Plan, overseeing innovative technological solutions to contemporary museum issues.

With a collecting history that extends back to 1755, the Princeton University Art Museum is one of the leading university art museums in the country, with collections that have grown to include more than 100,000 works ranging from ancient to contemporary art and spanning the globe. Its collections of Chinese painting, the art of the ancient Americas, and photography are widely regarded as being among the world's finest.

The Museum is located at the heart of the Princeton campus, a short walk from the shops and restaurants of Nassau Street, and is free and open to the public.

The AD leads a team of professional staff in support of the Museum's mission and strategic objectives as it relates to public-facing digital initiatives; collections management; hardware and software systems; digital asset creation and management; information architecture and systems integration; application development; current technologies (e.g. linked open data and International Interoperability Framework); and all matters relating to the Museum's online presence. The AD provides leadership and oversight for initiatives spanning all Museum departments including advising the Director on current and future technological trends and advancements in the museum field. The AD's fiscal responsibilities include managing funds of approximately $1.5 million annually. S/he also represents the Museum as a leader, both on campus and across the museum community.

The AD leads priority initiatives focused on providing complete digital access to the Museum's collections and exhibitions to students, faculty, scholars, and global users to promote the use of the Museum's collections in teaching and research. The AD works in collaboration with the Museum's department of Institutional Advancement in identifying and applying for external grants in support of these goals.

  • Bachelor's degree required/Master's degree preferred in computer science, information technology, or a related discipline
  • 15 or more years of experience in cultural, academic, or technology environments including 10 years in progressively responsible leadership roles, overseeing innovative technological solutions for managing visual information, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possess a deep understanding of and passion for the visual arts and humanities
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a visionary leader and think strategically to set priorities and achieve strategic objectives
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Proven success in managing finances in excess of $1.5 million as well as the ability to advocate for and secure funding sources for staff and initiatives
  • Possess applied knowledge and experience with managing information and technology in a museum, library, academic, or corporate setting with proven success in overseeing and leading people
  • Experience in managing staff responsible for complex information management systems and systems infrastructure development
  • The ability to think holistically, analytically, and strategically in synthesizing information and setting priorities
  • Proven success in developing and maintaining productive and fruitful relationships with professional colleagues
  • Exceptional written and verbal skills and superb attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and exceptional personal initiative
