The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) participates in the implementation of policy, programmatic and management goals. The Pulmonary Rehabilitation RRT is responsible for the day-to-day planning and conducting of specific exercise and lifestyle management assessment and intervention for individuals participating in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation program. The Pulmonary Rehabilitation RRT educates patients to help them better understand their disease process and to help improve quality of life.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality standards, programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Plans, conducts and demonstrates specific exercise and lifestyle interventions specific to the individual’s disease process Conducts new patient evaluations which include but not limited to: medical history, functional status, short and long-term goals, nutritional assessment, and emotional status.
  • Evaluates patients for exercise tolerance and determines individual treatment plans for each individual patient.
  • Properly monitors patient pulse oximetry, exertion levels and cardiac status as needed.
  • Provide patient specific education on the disease process, nutrition, medication administration and other topics related to their disease process. 
  • Maintains and properly operates all exercise equipment.
  • Properly documents all encounters in LSI and EPIC Works with Pulmonary Rehabilitation Medical Director as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. 
  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements. 
  • Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). 
  • Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.
  • Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code. 
  • Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
  • The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) may be asked to assist the Exercise Physiologist or RN with Cardiac Rehab programming

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) may be asked to assist the Exercise Physiologist or RN with Cardiac Rehab programming
  • Participates in the implementation of special programs sponsored by the department.
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Other related duties as assigned or requested.   

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand for the greater part of 8 hours. Occasional handling, grasping, twisting and turning while aiding clients and setting up equipment. The possibility of lifting clients weighing up to 300 pounds with assistance. The possibility of pushing clients weighing up to 300 pounds in a wheelchair. Occasional stooping, bending, squatting, crouching, and reaching above shoulder level. Touching as it relates to patient assessment, attaching heart monitors, and auscultation of lungs. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation, BP evaluation, and auscultating lung sounds. Seeing as it relates to general close-up and distant vision. Must be able to use finger dexterity, grasping, and holding as it relates to documentation an assisting with machinery setup.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist from an accredited educational center with valid license to practice respiratory care in the state of PA.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Familiar with Pulmonary Rehabilitation policy and procedure.
  • Prior clinical experience in Pulmonary Rehabilitation (preferred)
  • AARC / AACVPR Pulmonary Rehab certificate and / or Comparable certification may be obtained within 6 months of hire at the discretion of the facility manager.
  • BLS (with AED training) required
  • ACLS (preferred)

WORK SCHEDULE: 

  • Day or middle shift with varying hours based on the needs of the department.  (Current department operating hours: weekdays 7:00 am to 5:00 pm)
  • Schedule may be adjusted by Cardiopulmonary Rehab Director to meet department needs.
