Digital Media Specialist

The University of Iowa Iowa City, IA Full-Time

The Division of Performing Arts is seeking a Digital Media Specialist to be part of the Performing Arts Production Unit.  This new position will collaborate with existing staff, faculty, and students in the Department of Dance, Department of Theatre Arts, and the School of Music Opera program to implement digital media and emerging technologies in major productions.  This includes Dance Gala, UI Dance Company (UIDC), Theatre Arts Mainstages, and Opera productions.  In addition, this position will also support research and the integration of emerging technologies in the VR/MOCAP studio in coordination with faculty from units across campus.  

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team of artists and technical staff focused on the research and implementation of leading technologies in live performance. The person will be expected to remain at the forefront of the field and continue to investigate rapidly changing live event and virtual production technologies. Annual attendance and training at major conferences are expected.

 Duties to include:  

  • Primary support for the creative teams in the integration of emerging technologies related to digital media in Dance Gala, UIDC, Theatre Arts Mainstage, and Opera productions. 
  • Works with projection mapping, media server integration, interactive performance, virtual reality, augmented/mixed reality, motion capture, automation, and live performance.
  • As directed by the Production Manager, install and support digital media hardware, software, and other related technologies in the major productions for each unit.
  • May support digital media projects such as graduate thesis concerts, second stage projects, or interdisciplinary productions as directed by the DEOs of Dance, Theatre, and Music.
  • Collaborates with Audio/Video specialist in the maintenance of media servers, projection, VR, MOCAP, and live video equipment.
  • Remains at the fore-front of the field and investigates rapidly changing live event and virtual production technologies.

Education Required: 

A bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or fine arts discipline, or equivalent combination of related education and experience is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate and work effectively with diverse individuals in a diverse environment in a constructive and collaborative manner.
  • One year of demonstrated experience in theatrical production and live performance.
  • Proficiency with a computer programming language such as Python, C++, or JavaScript
  • Demonstrated proficiency with large format video projection and live video
  • Experience with virtual, augmented, or mixed reality
  • Experience with Unity, Unreal, or 3DS Max software
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Disguise, Isadora, Touch Designer, Pixera, or Pandoras Box software
  • Experience with peer-to-peer computer networks as well as the usage of one other networking protocol such as OSC, MIDI, or ARTNET.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with virtual production including live cameras, greenscreen, and sound routing.
  • Experience with motion capture technologies such as OptiTrack or Vicon and/or inertia motion capture suit technologies such as Perception Nueron, Rokoko or Realsense suits. 
  • Vision based sensor systems
  • Web app development for integration of backend systems
  • Experience working with students in a performing arts capacity, providing a training ground and opportunities for experiential learning.
