Calumet processes crude oil and other feedstocks into customized lubricating oils, solvents and waxes used in consumer, industrial and automotive products and produces fuel products including gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.

PURPOSE AND ROLE:

Member of the Research and Development team working closely with the R&D Director to lead innovation and deliver top tier products. The Industrial Product Formulation & Stewardship Manager will engage in fundamental research activities, development from concept to commercialization, optimizing existing technologies to meet specific industry, OEM or customer requirements. Gain OEM approvals and demonstrate product advantage. Work with raw material suppliers to evaluate base oil and additive functions and performance. Design and execution of test programs to establish product performance against industry and OEM specification. Develop and provide training to chemists and lab technicians, product support training to internal and external customers. Demonstrate laboratory safe practices and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Collaborate with suppliers and industry experts.


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead industrial lubricant formulation projects – including formulations of hydraulic oils, compressor oils, gear oils, greases, open gear lubricants, food grade lubricants and more
  • Evaluate raw material function and performance for industrial lubricant formulations
  • Collaborate with suppliers and OEMs to deliver innovative technologies
  • Provide expert technical support to Quality-control, production, sales, marketing teams and customers
  • Execution of test program to demonstrate product technology benefits
  • Maintain knowledge of industry specifications, OEMs (mining), ASTM, AGMA, NLGI, all required test procedures and test specifications
  • Develop and maintain product development processes
  • Proactively work with Cross-functional teams to support company products and brand strategy
  • Supports the strategic and operational direction of the business

ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES:

  • Strong interpersonal, networking and communication skills to work with suppliers, OEMs, customers and at industry seminars
  • Fosters positive work relationships and is a solid team player
  • Able to complete projects in a timely manner and get results
  • Strong attention to details, problem solving, organizational, oral presentation and writing skills

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineer, or related disciplines
  • 3 + years’ research experience in the petroleum Industry which includes formulary, base oil and additive technical knowledge pertaining to industrial lubricants
  • Established laboratory safety, technical competency with strong lubricant principles background
  • Experience using analytical equipment according to ASTM, DIN and ISO methods
  • Knowledge of lubricants industry, raw material manufacturers, OEMs and technical activities
  • Effective project management skills, ability to work on multiple projects, other technical task simultaneously in a timely manner

PREFERENCES:

  • MBA or PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines
  • 3 + years’ managing others
