In this role, you will primarily contribute to flight design, using NX, Solidworks, and/or Creo CAD. You will be assigned design tasks that may include design any of the following: primary and secondary flight structures, control surfaces, tube and harness routing, mechanisms, and GSE test hardware. In addition, you will be expected to conduct design review planning and execution, test planning and coordination, and non-conformance evaluation.

We are looking for passionate and self-motivated individuals interested in making commercial space travel a reality, by becoming part of the Dream Chaser Cargo System (DCCS) program that supports NASA’s Cargo Resupply Services 2 (CRS2) contract. SIERRA SPACE is looking to take Commercial Cargo services to the next level, and qualified Mechanical Engineers will have that opportunity.

The Senior Mechanical Designer Engineer will support the Mechanical Systems team and Integrated Product Teams (IPT) with performing design of mechanical and structural components of the DCCS Mechanical Systems.  The Mechanical Systems IPT has ownership of the following subsystems: Flight Control System, Landing Gear System, Wing System, Hatch System, & Vehicle Separation Systems

The engineer will be the main focal point for the design and verification of the assigned hardware.  Hardware could include metallic, non-metallic and composite components.  The engineer will have responsibility for creating detailed part, assembly, and installation drawings.  The engineer will also be responsible for the creation, review and release of requirements verification documents.

  • Support the development of the flight engineering for the Dream Chaser Cargo System. Responsibilities may include designing, testing, and integration of development and flight hardware

  • Manage and execute on design tasks from concept to product implementation

  • Understand, plan, and execute technical activities in accordance with SIERRA SPACE policies, procedures, and work instructions and specific Customer requirements

  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and schematics

  • Originate specifications, control documents, verification and validation plans, procedures, reports, or other documentation in support of design and development activities

  • Work with other Engineers to implement operating procedures, resolve system issues and provide technical information

  • Prepare material for, and conduct, periodic design reviews

  • Ensure conformance of products with engineering design and performance specifications

  • Execute engineering design and development activities consistent with Customer quality, cost, and schedule requirements

  • Conduct research that test and analyze the feasibility, design, operation and performance of equipment, components and systems

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • NX, Solidworks, and Creo CAD and Advanced CAD surfacing techniques

  • Design for manufacturing

  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing

  • Designing for spacecraft loads and environments

  • Familiarity with NASA and/or FAA structural design standards

  • Model based machining standards

  • Sheet metal part design

  • Familiarity with fiber reinforced polymer composites design is required.  

  • Work within integrated, multi-discipline teams

  • Follow SIERRA SPACE policies, procedures and work instructions for all technical activities

  • Punctuality to work each day and prepared to work scheduled work hours

  • Other duties as assigned

Must-haves:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related discipline and typically 10 or more years of relevant experience; experience may be considered in lieu of education.

  • 3D CAD design using NX (preferred), Solidworks, or Creo CAD including working with large assemblies

  • Mechanical Drafting including expertise with GD&T, assembly drawings, detail part drawings

  • Configuration management (PDM, PLM) preferably using Windchill

  • Understanding of engineering principles and practices

  • Experience with Computer Aided Engineering tools

  • Familiarity with working in multi-disciplinary design and development teams

Preferred:

  • Mechanical design for aircraft and/or spacecraft

  • Design of mechanisms

  • Working, creating, and managing large assemblies within CAD

  • Experience with Landing Gear Systems, Flight Controls and/or aircraft hydraulic / pneumatic system design and routing

Estimated Starting Salary Range: $117,040.88 - $160,931.20

Sierra Space offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
