Lead Desktop Engineer (PowerShell - SCCM)

Employment Type: Full Time

Annexa is currently supporting DC Public Schools and is seeking an experienced Desktop with specific experience managing Microsoft monitoring tools such as System Center Configuration Manager and the ability to create PowerShell scripts for workstations.  The Desktop Engineer is responsible for all aspects of the user computing environment. As part of the desktop engineering team, this engineer is responsible for building, delivery, and maintenance of stable, high performing, and secure desktop images that provide excellent user experiences. This engineer also is responsible for the support of all DCPS’s desktop applications, integrations, and the efficient delivery and updates of these applications. This position will report to the Director of Enterprise Applications. Continuously improves user desktop experiences through OS and application optimizations, automation, and streamlined processes. Evaluates, deploys, and supports all DCPS desktop applications. Develops seamless integrations among desktop applications. Performs routine software updates to enhance functionalities and security. Troubleshoots and resolves escalated desktop application and OS issues. Builds hardware agnostic image for desktop and laptop computers. Creates custom group policies and PowerShell scripts for workstations. Manages application package creations, and deliveries through SCCM. Maintains workstation security using various technologies such as endpoint protection software, data encryptions, application whitelisting, and others. Evaluates and recommends desktop, laptop hardware and peripherals. Performs desktop rollouts and data migrations using OSD task sequences and USMT. Creates documentation on system designs, procedures, and processes.

The Desktop Engineer will also be responsible for all aspects of implementation and maintenance of the desktop infrastructure at DCPS. A qualifying candidate will have extensive expertise in Microsoft management tools to include but not limited to Microsoft Intune, Bitlocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM) and System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM). The role will liaise with members of the IT Infrastructure team and the user community to resolve issues and respond to critical outages. This individual will work within a team of engineers to spearhead desktop development, standardization, application package creation & deployment, operating system imaging, monitoring and desktop virtualization in a fast-paced education environment. The ideal candidate should possess strong technical and analytic skills and stays abreast of new technologies and how it can be applied to the school district for continuous improvement. The Senior Desktop Engineer will have the following:

Required Skills and Experience 13+ Years

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related disciplines. Equivalent experience will be considered. 
• Minimum of seven years of experience in desktop engineering, application support, and supporting operating systems in a Microsoft Windows enterprise environment. 
• Minimum of five years of experience in customer support experience supporting a diverse customer base including C-level executives. 
• Microsoft certifications highly preferred. 
• Expert knowledge in customizing Windows 7, Windows 10, and image creation. In-depth knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy Objects, and PowerShell. 
• Advanced knowledge with user profile, folder redirection, and Windows registry. 
• Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office application customizations, and add-ins. 
• Experience with SCCM, packaging and application deployment in multiple offices. 
• In-depth knowledge working with browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox) customizations, security settings, policies, and plug-in. 
• Experience in legal specific applications a plus – FileSite, Workshare, Payne Form Assistant, Numbering, IntApp, IPro, Litigation Support Software, and others. 
• Working experience in large scale deployment using technologies including, SCCM task sequences, OSD, USMT, MDT, WDS,App-V and others. 
• Extensive knowledge in information security including, Sophos/CM endpoint protections, Bitlocker, MBAM, Bit9, Zscaler, Windows security policies, digital certificates, file permission, AD security or other similar products. 
• Familiarity with VMWare, virtual machines, and Citrix XenApp, and XenDesktop. 
• Knowledge of general application architectures and SQL a plus. Solid understanding of networking concepts including, TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, VPN, load balancing, DHCP, VPN, and PXI Boot. 
• Proven strong analytical and troubleshooting skills. 
• Strong customer service skills and customer driven minded. 
• Detail oriented and have sense of urgency. 
• Highly motivated self-starter with ability to work effectively, and independently with minimal supervision. Innovative and creative thinker. 
• Ability to communicate clearly, and concisely, both verbally and in writing. 
• Possess strong sense of achievement and willingness to contribute to a dynamic team environment. 
• Ability to work after-hours or weekends as needed. 
• Ability to effectively present information, and work with users at all levels in DCPS.

• Minimum 8 years of experience in IT desktop engineering roles.
• Minimum 6 years of experience with Windows desktop operating system within a corporate environment including MS Office installation and configuration,
• Minimum 6 years of experience with application packaging using Windows Installer technology.
• Advanced knowledge and expertise with Windows Operating system - registry, profiles, services and components, file system and application compatibility.
• Demonstrated understanding of Active Directory and related technologies - Group Policy, DNS, WINS, DHCP, and TCP/IP.
• Experience with application packaging and distribution using tools such as InstallShield, and Flexera AdminStudio.
• Expertise with application virtualization and delivery using VMWare, AWS, Citrix and similar technologies.
• Experience with desktop operating system imaging, build, design, deployment and lifecycle management.
• Comprehensive understanding of Windows registry.
• Strong scripting and development knowledge – Powershell, VBScript, Batch.
• Experience with system management tools – Intune, LANDESK, SCCM, Altiris, etc.
• Working knowledge of patch management and security
• Reasonable knowledge of VDI technologies and remote computing.

Specific Duties

• Work as part of a team to oversee the school district’s computing environment comprised of physical systems and a virtual environment.
• Formulate, project manage and execute various Infrastructure related projects to meet needs.
• Assist support staff with research, resolutions and support as needed. Own issues and the delivery of a resolution.
• Evaluate current systems and recommend improvements from a technology standpoint.
• Responsible for the researching of new methods for enhancing overall end-user experience.


• Provide expertise and analysis in the design, development, and implementation of technical solutions with respect to education and corporate desktop environments.
• Own highly complex technical issues and conduct advanced research for desktop solutions.
• Act as the technical lead and single escalation point of contact client-computing environment.
• Display proven ability to manage Intune and SCCM systems management suite.
• Document technical environment, operating procedures, and guidelines.
• Create, maintain software packages, and manage large-scale targeted distribution of software.
• Responsible for the creation of software packages – accept ownership of the approval and testing.
• Proactively identify potential problems and advise management of trends.
• Develop and troubleshoot complex scripts for Zero/Lite-Touch OS deployment
• Work closely with various vendors to maintain efficient methods for installation, updates and upgrades of all client-computing software.
• Work closely with other teams within the IT unit to ensure system uptime and security compliance of the desktop environment.
• Research, investigate and propose to management new methodologies to improve customer efficiency, and productivity.
• Leverage existing Change and Problem Management processes.
• Ensure standards compliance for all systems within scope.
