Senior Uncertainty Quantification Method Developer
The Senior Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) Method Developer is part of a growing team supporting the design and licensing of a reactor and is primarily responsible for the implementation and use of sensitivity and uncertainty quantification analysis methods within TerraPower’s ARMI multidisciplinary reactor design framework.
The Senior Uncertainty Quantification Method Developer may also contribute subject matter expertise to other projects under development by the TerraPower Sodium Fast Reactor (SFR) Program. Other engineering activities include, but are not limited to, contributing to the development of computational methodologies and models for safety analysis, contributing as necessary to software commercial grade dedication, participating in hazard analysis, participating to Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table (PIRT) exercises, participating to Structures, Systems and Components (SSC) classification, as well as supporting validation activities.
Under TerraPower matrix organizational structure, the Senior Uncertainty Quantification Method Developer receives administrative and technical supervision from the Nuclear Safety and Licensing Discipline Manager and direction from project managers.
- Design, implement, and maintain software tools to perform sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification as well as formal margin assessment and tracking within the ARMI framework.
- Perform sensitivity and UQ analyses as needed.
- Work in collaboration with external partners to establish the initial UQ framework and support the evolving safety and licensing needs.
- Train and support nuclear safety and licensing engineers in the use of the sensitivity and UQ tools.
- Review proposed code changes to ARMI framework, safety analysis plug-ins, and other TerraPower software and provide detailed feedback.
- Produce formal documentation of software requirements, design, implementation, and testing.
- Work with nuclear safety and licensing engineers to ensure compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements for software.
Key Qualifications and Skills
- At least 5+ years of related experience with a B.S. degree; or 3 years and a M.S. degree or equivalent experience in the nuclear field. PhD without commercial experience but with relevant expertise will be considered.
- Experience with best estimate and Code Scaling, Applicability, and Uncertainty (CSAU) evaluation methodologies is required.
- Good knowledge of safety analysis codes such as SAS4A/SASSYS-1, GOTHIC, RELAP5, TRACE, MELCOR, MACCS, or RADTRAD.
- Understanding of NQA-1 requirements associated with analysis and software management as well as experience working under a quality assurance programs.
- Experience with SFR safety analysis is highly desirable. Experience with other reactor designs can be considered when differentiating candidates.
- Strong programming skills in any language, but knowledge of Python and Fortran is preferred.
- Good understanding of software development life cycle and demonstrated good software development practices.
- Knowledge of UQ methods in different areas (neutronics and nuclear data, thermal-hydraulics, fuel performance, etc.) can be considered when differentiating candidates.
- Ability and professionalism to work within published regulatory guidelines.
- Demonstrated strong quantitative, analytical, modeling and reporting skills.
- The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
