The Product Development Software Team is responsible for best-in-class Automated Distribution and Wireless Communication products for improving the Smart Electric Grid’s resiliency and reliability. System Architects report to the Sr Manager of System & Software Architecture, and work in a department that is chartered to refine requirements and architecture for intelligent embedded software devices, system applications, and accompanying communication subsystems. The System Architect (Wireless and RF) is responsible for all activities carried out in support of optimizing wireless system performance, executing inter-operability tests, developing/executing test strategies and test plans, troubleshooting/analyzing problems, and supporting customers with RF related issues while working as part of a larger system engineering team performing systems engineering functions such as requirements management, system architecture, technology evaluation, participating and contributing to industry standards, and others.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Create system performance and requirement specifications for wireless communication systems
  • Create system architecture for wireless communication systems including algorithm and protocol selection and/or design
  • Decompose marketing requirements into authored system and product level requirements and architectural specifications
  • Create simulation models to characterize wireless channel performance
  • Drive architectural explorations and conduct conceptual evaluation of design alternatives for the wireless subsystem
  • Analyze and track wireless communication trends and emerging technologies
  • Oversee and review the traceability from system level requirements and architectural abstractions to individual network element requirements and detailed architecture descriptions
  • Collaborate with the hardware and the software teams to characterize and troubleshoot system performance issues
  • Definition of high-level field deployment guidelines used by field service teams
  • Drive or participate in unique customer specific solutions
  • Take a hands-on approach (down to the software code level as necessary) with the product implementations to define and deliver appropriate requirements and architectural solutions
  • Collaborate in a fast paced and dynamic work environment, as part of a self-sufficient independent contributor and potential project lead in a team of System and Product Architects
  • Have a strong and proven leadership ability
  • Collaborate with Engineering (hardware, electronic, software development & test) to deliver reliable, mission critical solutions and products
  • Participate in and occasionally lead the frontend of the development process of a project through implementation of S&C Product Development processes and monitoring adherence through various milestones gates

To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science or demonstrated equivalent, an MS or higher degree preferred
  • Ten or more years working in wireless and RF systems with five or more years working as a system or product level architect. Must possess in-depth knowledge of various wireless networks and technologies.
  • Solid understanding of digital communications systems, RF propagation, TDM, CDMA, OFDM, MIMO, and other telecommunications concepts
  • Familiarity with air interface protocols, air interface performance analysis, characterization and optimization
  • Experience performing RF propagation analysis including channel planning and detailed RF design functions in both a simulated and field environment. Thorough understanding of RF modulation techniques.
  • Knowledge of antenna design and experience with antenna selection
  • Thorough understanding of OSI layers 1, 2 and 3 with emphasis on layer 1&2 wireless modulation and security technologies.
  • Knowledge of wireless ad-hoc networking and routing algorithms
  • Experience with commercial test simulators and test systems such as Anite, R&S, Agilent, Spirent, Aeroflex, and Anritsu for wireless telephony product verification
  • Understanding of Physical/MAC layers and call processing concepts in one or more of the following air interface standards – WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE, 4G, 5G.
  • Experience in the design and development of wireless media access control (MAC) protocols a plus.
  • Experience in the design and development of wireless link adaptation protocols a plus.
  • Experienced in the design and development of OFDM based systems, a plus.
  • Experience with participation in standards organizations related to wireless systems (IEEE 802.11, 3GPP) a plus.
  • Experience working in a substation environment including detailed understanding of specific RTU protocols/interfaces with SCADA is a plus.
  • Experience in network management platforms and underlying protocols.
  • Experience with real-time embedded software for intelligent devices.
  • Experience with proprietary and standards-based control system protocol design
  • Definition of network element software architecture
  • COTS software integration including third-party platforms and operating systems
  • Internet Protocol v4,v6, Network routing implementations, Network protocols
  • Linux, Android, and iOS operating systems is a PLUS
  • Detail-oriented and logical thinker with strong analytical skills; Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Up to 5% potential travel per year

Relevant Experience Required: This is an experienced position. Looking for a candidate willing to be a hands-on Wireless and RF System Architect working on first-of-a-kind products. Must have a laser focus on the timeliness of the product release while maintaining a robust and reliable quality focused development process. Be willing to partner with other engineering teams to create innovative ways to automate and expand our processes to ultimately drive improved product quality and speedier delivery. Membership of standards organizations that drive future trends.
