Research Specialist

Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, MD Full-Time

The Culotta lab for fungal biology research is looking to hire a full-time Research Specialist, starting January-April 2022. The successful candidate will help set up and contribute to multiple projects in the lab related to the biology of infectious fungi, with an emphasis on microbial physiology in fungal cultures and during rodent models of fungal infections.

The individual will participate in laboratory research, using biochemical, molecular genetics and cell biology approaches to examine fungal enzymes and membrane transporters that contribute to fungal adaptation to environmental stress, including changes in micronutrient availability and free radical stress as occurs during infection. 

The individual will be responsible for managing equipment in the lab and to assist Dr. Culotta, when appropriate in mentoring trainees. We are looking for collegial individuals who will contribute to forming a collaborative and inclusive research environment. Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Microbiological work: growing cultures of Candida species and tracking morphology and cellular compartments through microscopy.
  • Analytical work: using various forms of spectroscopy and biochemical methods to analyze enzymatic reactions, detection of free radicals and cellular micronutrients.
  • Molecular genetic work: apply CRISPR and other molecular genetic applications to genetically alter fungi.
  • Perform, document, and analyze experiments in a rigorous and ethical manner to be included in publications / grants.
  • Train students in the lab and perform quality assurance reviews for the scientific data, as well as participate in the discussion of ideas for new research projects.
  • Set up, optimize, and validate lab protocols.
  • Organize laboratory working areas and supplies.
  • Ordering of lab supplies through the Johns Hopkins SAP system.
  • Routine maintenance of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Microbiology, or related field.
  • A minimum of one laboratory research experience in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology and/or microbial molecular genetics.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of publication in a peer reviewed journal in biochemistry, microbiology or molecular genetics are preferred, but not required.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational skills, communication, record keeping, and ability to take direction are very important.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office is required.
  • The technician should be competent in Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Word.

Physical Requirements:

  • Materials, machines and/or equipment used on the job include balances, pH meters, centrifuges, electrophoresis system, microscopes, UV and visible spectroscopy, and incubators for growing fungal and bacterial cultures.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
