Surgeon-Scientist or Scientist: Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital
The Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Department at Boston Children’s Hospital is seeking an academic surgeon-scientist or scientist to join our tissue engineering research program. Areas of particular interest include protein scaffold design, development, implantation and translation of biomaterials to clinical use. This position aims to support transformational research and doctoral-level training at the forefront of orthopedic science.
Appointment as an instructor, assistant professor, or associate professor at Harvard Medical School will be commensurate with experience, training, and achievements. Teaching activities will include instruction in the conduct of research for medical students, residents and fellows, graduate students, and post-doctoral research fellows.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop a nationally recognized research program in tissue engineering and biomaterials.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to drive initiatives focused on using structural proteins, including collagen, to develop scaffolds for orthopedic applications.
- Engage in research that intersects with the broader fields of biomechanics, regenerative medicine, and translational science.
- If a surgeon-scientist, maintain a focused clinical practice (50% effort) alongside research.
Qualifications
- Strong background in tissue engineering, materials science, or related fields.
- Proven track record of research productivity and potential for securing outside funding.
- Commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, and collaborative research.
- MD, PhD, or equivalent qualifications.

Support and Resources
The position will be initially supported by the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Department, with potential for additional institutional support. Full scientists will be expected to become self-sufficient through grants and collaborations. Surgeon-scientists will have 50% of time protected for research, which will be expected to be grant-funded.
