GRADUATE NURSE APPRENTICE FOR SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH SYSTEM

South Texas Health System (STHS) is a network of six acute care hospitals and one behavioral health hospital that together provide care for patients throughout South Texas. The hospitals are accredited by The Joint Commission and offer a comprehensive range of healthcare services including cardiovascular, maternity and women’s health, neuroscience, emergency and surgical care, along with specialty programs in transplant, stroke, chest pain, asthma, pediatrics, diabetes, wound care, bariatrics and rehabilitation. Our hospitals include: McAllen Medical Center, McAllen Heart Hospital, Edinburg Regional Medical Center, Edinburg Children's Hospital, Edinburg Regional Rehab Center, South Texas Behavioral Health Center and Cornerstone Regional Hospital. POSITION SUMMARY: The Graduate Nurse Apprentice (GNA) has completed a program from an accredited school of nursing and is awaiting permit to practice in the State of Texas as a graduate nurse. The GNA is under the direct supervision of a registered nurse and the nursing education program of South Texas Health System. The registered nurse acts as the preceptor and mentor and should be present at all times to provide guidance, and assist the student to gain knowledge of policies and judgment necessary to perform professional nursing services. Must demonstrate Service Excellence standards at all times.  

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.     Prefer one year full time or three years part time experience in acute care setting.

2.     Must demonstrate commitment and adherence to STHS’s Compliance Program and Code of Conduct through compliance with all policies and procedures, the Code of Conduct, attendance at required training and immediately reporting suspected compliance issue(s) to the Compliance Officer.

EDUCATION / LICENSURE:

1.     Registered Nurse currently licensed in the State of Texas, or part of a compact state license, or has a valid temporary RN license for the State of Texas while waiting to receive the permanent license. BSN preferred.

2.     Effective January 6, 2012, must possess an Associate Degree, Baccalaureate Degree or Diploma from a School of Nursing or University.

3.     Must have and maintain BLS

4.     Must have and maintain current certifications, according to unit specific needs.  Certification must be in accordance with the curriculum of the AHA, for Healthcare Provider’s Program (for any and all certifications applicable through the AHA program) – please check all that apply:

BCLS/CPR

Must be current upon hire and thereafter

ACLS

If required in unit, nurse with a year or less of experience - obtain within 12 months of hire, unless in Labor and Delivery or Post-Partum where RN must obtain within six months of hire;

nurse with over a year of experience - obtain within 6 months of hire;

or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times

PALS

  or

ENPC

If required in unit, nurse with a year or less of experience - obtain within 12 months of hire;

nurse with over a year of experience - obtain within 6 months of hire;

or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times

 

NRP

If required in unit, nurse with a year or less of experience - obtain within 12 months of hire, unless in Labor and Deliver or Post-Partum where RN must obtain within six months of hire,

nurse with over a year of experience - obtain within 6 months of hire;

or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times

TNCC or  or T-CAR

If required in unit, must have and maintain certification within eighteen months after hire;

or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times

STABLE

If required in unit, must obtain within 12 months of hire,

or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times

CPI

If required in unit, nurse with a year or less of experience - obtain within 12 months of hire; nurse with over a year of experience - obtain within 6 months of hire;

or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times

SAMA

If required in unit, - obtain within 30 days of hire

FETAL MONITOR

If required in unit, nurse with a year or less of L&D experience - obtain within 12 months of hire; nurse with over a year of L&D experience - obtain within 6 months of hire; or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times.
