Job Description

Primary Responsibilities:

The Web Applications Engineer is responsible for the programming and development of an interactive prototype based on an existing wireframe as the basis for requirements and user stories.  The developer will select a commercial JavaScript framework that features rapid prototyping and responsive design to enable the demo to operate effectively on different form factors. The prototype will be developed in an AWS environment, taking advantage of AWS services for functionality, storage and image recognition are examples, knowledge of AWS is critical. The prototype will not be used for production development so coding choices should prioritize speed and interactivity. Experience in Agile and Lean development principles is a must.

Secondary Responsibilities:

The Web Applications Engineer is expected to serve as QA and DevOps engineer for the project as well, performing testing, automating where possible, implementing deployment scripts, implementing continuous integration and continuous deployment where possible.  The Web Applications Engineer will provide demos at the end of each Sprint to the client presenting completed user stories and features.

Client and Project Description:

The Trademark IT Acquisition, Programs and Planning (TM-ITAPP) within the Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Trademark Administration, Office of the Commissioner, United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The TM-ITAPP is charged with providing project and program management support in the implementation of technical business solutions for the Trademark Business Unit. TM-ITAPP is responsible for the communications, collaboration, project management, basic technology practices/development/processes, resource management, and system/business analysis necessary to support buildable and testable requirements for delivering professional information technology services and solutions to the Trademarks Business Unit.

Team Description:

Working with a team of 5 people to provide Web Applications Engineering leadership to build out an interactive and responsive prototype of an existing wire frame demo. Excellent team dynamic with opportunity to take ownership of key deliverable and tasks.

Skills and Certifications:

  • Expert (10+ years) experience in developing, deploying and debugging web applications using web technologies, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Node.js
  • MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, MIS or similar relevant field
  • Full stack web development experience
  • Expert knowledge of JavaScript (10+ years) with a strong understanding of JavaScript fundamentals such as prototype inheritance, composition, CommonJS/AMD module systems using RequireJS
  • Experience (5+ years) with a responsive design for desktop/mobile
  • Extensive (8+years) HTML/CSS/AJAX/Javascript frameworks for rapid prototyping in any or all off the following jQuery, Bootstrap, Backbone/Angular/Ember/Meteor/React/Polymer/aurelia/Spine/Mithrill coding experience
  • CSS compiler knowledge (E.g., Sass, LESS)
  • Experience working with Agile and Scrum
  • Ability to work independently and provide leadership for completing work.
