The Mechanical Design Engineer II will, under general supervision, assist in the design, fabrication, and testing of components for mechatronic devices.

Principal Responsibilities The Mechanical Design Engineer II:
- Participates within a research team to design and develop mechatronic prosthetic limbs.
- Assists with performing engineering analysis, such finite element modeling as needed in device development.
- Assists in the design of mechanisms, electromechanical systems, implantable devices, and related components to meet required performance targets and safety factors.
- Completes specific, defined tasks and becomes proficient in the engineering practices they require. Takes lead in coordinating tasks with others. Anticipates next actions. Manages small projects (scope, timeline, etc.). Accurately estimates time to complete major tasks or projects that are mostly autonomous.
- Works with out-sourced vendors to acquire custom-made components, and ensure appropriate design specifications and tolerances in fabricated prototypes.
- Works with electrical engineering team to integrate electronic and mechanical designs into a robust, operational device.
- Creates CAD models and drawings of complexity commensurate with experience; interacts with appropriate manufacturers and machine companies; and assembles and debugs components.
- Assists with testing components and creating models to suggest future improvements.
- Participates in maintaining a safe work environment through adherence to policies and procedures relative to safety, fire prevention, hazard communications, security, equipment use and maintenance, infection control and vehicle safety.
- Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
- A professional level of knowledge in engineering technology generally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and programming software (Matlab preferred) for analysis purposes. Expertise commensurate with experience.
- Ability to design, fabricate, and program test systems to validate design performance, with proficiency commensurate with experience.
- Ability to work independently and structure time to meet deadlines, in addition to being flexible to changing design requirements and deliverables.
- Ability to work with hand tools, electronics tools, and machine tools to fabricate, adjust, modify, and repair devices necessary.
- Good communication skills in both written and verbal forms. Able to work well with research subjects in a clinical setting.
- Minimum of 2 years of related experience working on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Continues to develop professional expertise, applying institute policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues.
- Able to take direction and complete defined tasks in addition to anticipating and executing follow-up actions.
- Able to perform assignments by receiving general instructions on routine work, and detailed instructions on new projects or assignments.
- Able to exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
- Able to build stable working relationships internally.
- Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
