The position of clinical nursing director is characterized by its independent nature in one or more of the following respects: In the assigned, delegated areas of responsibility, they act with the full authority of the chief nursing officer, reporting after the fact and as necessary to maintain confidence and coordination
Acting decisively in assigned areas of responsibility by making and interpreting policy in the name of the chief nursing officer.Receiving direction in terms of objectives, nursing service standards and organizational philosophy rather than in terms of specific operating policies and procedures
 Exercising delegated authority and responsibility for nursing policy-making and operations such as, but not limited to establishing nursing standards and criteria, assuring quality control of patient care, coordinating nursing services with other departments, services, and disciplines
 At this level, coordination is complex due to the numbers of units or programs involved, the complexity of nursing care, and the need to resolve complex interdisciplinary problems with other autonomous decision makers
 Clinical nursing directors exercise an advanced, expert knowledge of management and leadership, as well as nursing operations, practices, and theory
 They serve as members of the executive management team for nursing and usually report to a chief nursing officer
