BOAST High School Facilitator
Baltimore Online Algebra for Students in Technology (BOAST) is a hybrid afterschool program for high school students who have an interest in learning more about engineering while strengthening their Algebra content knowledge. BOAST is funded by the National Science Foundation (Grant no. 2005790) and administered by the Center for Educational Outreach in the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The mission of the Center is to increase the number of youth pursuing STEM education and careers. BOAST is designed to give school-based cohorts of students who have recently completed Algebra I with a C or better an opportunity to reinforce that knowledge by applying it to engineering activities, allowing them to practice their math skills while solving a variety of real-world challenges.
Students will work on self-paced projects consisting of online and hands-on build components with deadlines for 2-4 hours per week. These projects may take several weeks to complete depending on the difficulty. The students will not need to be actively engaged at a computer for the entire duration of this time. Students will also attend 2-3 in-person sessions per month at their school. They will also be offered a space at their school where they can work, meet virtually with the online instructor, and collaborate within their cohort at least once per week.
The BOAST Program Has Five Major Components
Hybrid Content
* A hybrid engineering project-based applied math program that can be undertaken during out of school time (OST) periods after the school day at students' regular school sites, or at another time and location of the students' choosing.
Supportive Structured Environment
* Support from a nurturing online instructor, facilitators hired from the school, and school-based mental health professionals. Incentives such as awards for the top scoring high school will be used to reward engagement.
Enrichment
* Field trips to JHU Whiting School of Engineering and engineering companies in and around Baltimore, MD.
Role Models
* Video profiles of diverse, local engineers and engineering students to be viewed with parents or caregivers.
Promotion of Career Interest
* Participation will help students access other STEM programs in 11th or 12th grade at JHU, Building STEPS or JHU Applied Physics Laboratory.
We are seeking a BOAST School Coordinator who will provide technical support and ensure students are able to access a space with fully-functioning computers and internet during designated afterschool times. They will find and maintain a storage space for BOAST material bins at the school site for the school year. This role will also monitor interactions of the students to ensure it is a safe, welcoming, supportive, and productive environment. When guests such as BOAST Instructors and school-based mental health professionals are invited to the BOAST classroom, BOAST School Coordinator will welcome them and manage the classroom. When students are struggling, the facilitator will encourage students to engage with the instructor or fellow students or to use the supplemental materials provided by BOAST online. If this individual observes non-academic challenges in a student, they may refer the student to the school-based mental health professional. They will assist with collecting paperwork and delivering messages to students, if needed. Lastly, will provide feedback to the BOAST team for research as well as program improvement.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
* Work with school leadership to ensure students have access to a dedicated space in the school afterschool with adequate space for students to work on their engineering projects
* Work with school leadership to identify secure storage space for in-progress student projects
* Ensure students have access to fully functioning computers with internet connections
* Troubleshoot and resolve internet connection, log-on or other computer issues
* Dispense materials kits to students
* Encourage students to attend in person sessions, virtual office hours, and utilize the afterschool classroom space, if needed
* Help keep students on schedule by reminding them of key program deadlines
* Monitor students while they work to ensure safety and the school's code of conduct is upheld
* Provide status updates to the BOAST program manager, coach, hybrid instructor and other team members about student program participation and progress
* Reach out and check-in with students and families throughout the program and/or if students stop attending the program
* Coordinate a 5-minute welcome and later a 45-minute mental health/life skills session with the school-based clinician during the program
Minimum Qualifications
* High School Diploma required
* Currently working in a Baltimore City Public Schools whose leadership has committed to partnering with the BOAST program
Preferred Qualifications
* Bachelor's Degree
* STEM certification or other specialized certification
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
* Tech savvy and computer literate
* Knowledge of school and district resources, especially technology support
* Has ability to troubleshoot and solve computer, internet and wi-fi problems
Physical Requirements:
* Must be able to lift up to 40pounds, stand for multiple hours at time, and walk for 30-45 minutes
