Qualifications

  • A demonstrated potential to appropriately acknowledge and respond to the multiple needs of the population served is required; effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, pursue clients on foot, and physically restraint clients (with appropriate training), bend, squat, and reach. Must be able to stand for several hours at a time
  • Prior to employment, 2 employment verifications and/or references, a completed child abuse clearance application and a completed PA State Police clearance are required. A FBI clearance application will be complete if applicable (out of state residents only)
  • To drive a program vehicle, the Employee must show proof of valid drivers license and successfully complete Woods Services driver training program.

Staff Counselor I

  • High school diploma (or equivalency) and 1 years of direct care experience required or supervised practice in lieu of the experience requirement. Experience with children/adolescents required.

Staff Counselor II

  • 12 semester behavioral health credit hours from an accredited college/university program and 1 years of direct care experience required or supervised practice in lieu of the experience requirement. Experience with children/adolescents required.

Staff Counselor III

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university in human services, which includes, but may not be limited to the following: sociology, political science, counseling, criminal justice, pastoral counseling, elementary/special education of family therapy and other related fields. A minimum of 1-year direct care experience required or supervised practice in lieu of the experience requirement. Experience with children/adolescents required.

Overview

Responsible for the care and supervision of emotionally disturbed children and adolescent residential clients.  Helps clients in a positive, respectful manner that recognizes individual differences.  Models appropriate behaviors.



Responsibilities

  • Actively participates in and contributes to the therapeutic community through the implementation, coordination, and support of programmatic components
  • Ensures the client’s safety and well-being; actively supervises clients in accordance with each client’s needs, treatment goals, program policies and procedures
  • Relates to clients and family members in a manner that reflects an awareness of and respect for individual variances including cognitive and developmental functioning, as well as social behavior, familial, religious, cultural, and ethnic differences
  • Serves as a role model to clients with respect to mature appropriate behavior, problem solving and coping responses, initiative, active listening and other social skills, punctuality, grooming and dress, and accepting direction from the Residential Director and other supervisory staff
  • Communicates with family members and / or agency personnel in a positive, effective manner
  • Maintains the confidentiality of clients and their families/guardians
  • Participates as a member of the program’s interdisciplinary treatment team, contributes information regarding client progress in relation to the individual’s general well-being; identifies treatment goals and strategies (including individualized protocols), his or her role and functioning within the program milieu, special needs, community and family interactions, and other pertinent information. Documents information as directed
  • Assists in the development of individual treatment goals and strategies; implements planned treatment procedures under the supervision of the Program Manager or designee and, as appropriate, in consultation with the Primary Therapist, Teacher, and/or Clinical Director.
  • Monitors, reports upon and documents progress as directed. Recommends procedural modifications to enhance client functioning
  • Teaches and supervises clients regarding unit responsibilities, rules, contingency responses, and chores
  • Implements crisis stabilization procedures as directed by the Residential Director and in accordance with established policies and procedures. In the event of any emergency, communicates pertinent information to the appropriate person. Prepare incident reports as directed
  • Implements behavior management and / or level system protocols as directed by the Residential Director in consultation with the Clinical Director
  • Actively supports classroom supervision as directed by the teacher. Supports client’s academic endeavors a manner that emphasizes client’s strengths and accomplishments. Provides individualized instruction and group behavior management assistance as directed by the teacher
  • Provides supervision of and guidance regarding client’s acquisition of age-appropriate competencies related to activities of daily living, including the following: dressing, washing, personal hygiene, bed making, and others.
  • Plans and implements leisure and recreational activities (individual and group) in coordination with the program’s Recreational Therapist
  • May be requested to drive a program vehicle. If driving, must show proof of valid drivers license and successfully complete Woods Services driver training program
  • Provides supervision of client’s organization and care of clothing and personal belongings; conducts inventory procedures
  • Provides supervision of and instruction regarding age-appropriate independent living skills, such as laundering, personal money management, utilization of community resources, and others
  • Supervises meal serving; facilitates appropriate mealtime social interactions. Supervises post-meal clean up and hygienic food storage
  • Participates in required staff development orientation and continuing in-service training. Contributes to training effectiveness through participation in evaluation processes; recommends ways in which training can be enhanced.
  • Upon completion of required training, administers emergency first aid treatment (including CPR) and implements fire safety procedures in accordance with Woods’ policies and procedures
  • Receives/provides relevant information (written and oral) regarding clients, milieu status and programming to/from successive shift staff
  • Maintains satisfactory attendance and punctuality
  • Maintains effective communication and working relationships with co-workers and supervisory staff
  • Performs other duties relevant to program operations as defined by the Residential Manager or designee
