The Printing Cell Lead will work as a leader in the printing department, which present uses dry offset printing to produce finished containers for customers. Reporting to the Printing Shift Supervisor, the Cell Leader is responsible for coordinating the activities and resources of the assigned cell and ensure the team is positioned to meet the quality, delivery and productivity targets for the printing departments. In order to do this well, he or she will need to know the daily expectations of the cell, know the current status throughout the shift, make the necessary adjustments, and provide the technical support required to hit the targets.


Coordination of Activities for Printing Department

Overlap with the previous or next shift to understand unusual circumstances, scheduling issues and ongoing problems.

Assist Group Leader with assignment of personnel at the start of the shift - identify any labor shortages or skill issues - ensure machines run through shift change.

Assist set-up operators in CM&R or quality inspection / machine adjustment as required.

Re-assign personnel as required - set-up operators for CM&R, press operators to cover breaks and lunches on high priority presses, technician to priorities.

Conduct quick walk around the area checking each press for issues.

Respond to downtime issues by working directly with Technicians as required - escalate problems that exceed 30 minutes.

Attend cell leader meeting.


Schedule jobs in the correct sequence on the Daily Machine Scheduling & Attainment board.

Check and authorize job starts and fill out the Line Inspection Sheet.

Update cell production report with downtime information.

Complete the update of the scheduling board at the end of the shift, totaling all the appropriate columns.

Complete and submit Cell Leader report.

Coaching, Teaching & Leadership

Identify training opportunities to Group Leader.

Actively participate in problem solving.

Provide technical assistance to Operators as required.

Responsible for training Team Members on GMPs, Food Safety, and Quality procedure.

New Job Approvals

Assists with new job approval tasks and associated documentation.

Back-Up for Group Leaders

This position is back-up for Group Leaders.

Back-up for this position is the designated Set-up Operators or Press.


Educational Requirements: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Minimum Experience/Field: At least 5 years' experience as a press operator.

Communication Skills: Fluent in English with good written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Education/Experience/Skills: Demonstrated ability to perform CM&R to targets. Shows positive leadership qualities. Able to coordinate multiple activities at the same time.


  • The Printing Cell Lead should be capable of fulfilling the basic responsibilities of machine operation including tearing down, washing, and setting up printing presses and running lid and base presses.
  • Appropriately communicate with all team members, de-escalating conflicts and relaying information to appropriate parties.
  • Ability to diagnose printing problems and initiate appropriate corrective action.
  • Ability to complete color match and registration on all lid and base pressed. Monitor product quality and adjust as needed.
  • Ability to monitor and update downtime information.
