A fast growing furniture retailer located in Manchester, CT is seeking a Tax Director who will play a vital role in overseeing all aspects of the Company’s accounting for income, sales and use, and property taxes.   In this newly established position, this person will be the most senior tax professional in the Company and will be responsible for building internal tax accounting processes and procedures.  This individual will coordinate with a national CPA firm in transitioning income tax accounting from the external tax advisors and be a valued business partner to the finance organization for all aspects of tax accounting and compliance.  We are a growing team helping to drive decision-making in a growing business, and we are always looking for new and better ways to perform our functions. Partial remote work flexibility.


  • Oversee all aspects of accounting for incomes taxes, sales & use taxes, and property taxes  including interaction with the Company's external tax and accounting advisors to ensure appropriate tax accounting and reporting

  • Build internal tax process, systems, and policies/procedures including development of Company policies, procedures, and processes to minimize income tax risks.

  • Budget for the provision for income taxes and analyze changes in the effective tax rate including trends and risk to budget.

  • Prepare technical accounting memoranda to support key positions taken by the Company as it relates to the U.S. GAAP income tax provision.

  • Coordinate and review income tax provisions timely and accurately in accordance with U.S. GAAP income tax accounting

  • Prepare tax account analysis, including current and deferred tax expense, income tax payables, liabilities for uncertain tax positions, and other relevant tax accounts

  • Prepare the tax footnote to include all required disclosures for accuracy

  • Coordinate with the Company’s independent auditor on all aspects of the income tax provision

  • Manage and control the SOX process as it relates to income tax accounting and reporting, including sign-offs by all relevant parties, and create audit ready documentation.

  • Partner with a national CPA firm to ensure the timely and accurate preparation and filing of the Company’s federal, state, and local income tax returns

  • Partner with a national CPA firm in developing and implementing tax strategies to reduce tax the Company’s effective tax rate and to minimize income tax exposures

  • Partner with a national CPA firm in the analysis of complex tax matters impacting the Company together with monitoring tax developments and analyzing the potential impact to the Company of proposed changes to federal, state, or local income taxes.

While this is not a supervisory position with direct reports, leadership opportunities will be frequent with this role overseeing all aspects of the Company’s accounting for income, sales and use, and property taxes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting

  • Certified Public Accountant / CPA

  • Minimum 5 - 10 years of progressive experience in Tax Accounting, with a mix of public accounting and private industry preferred

  • Strong working knowledge of income tax accounting ; federal, state income tax compliance; sales & use accounting and compliance; and property tax accounting and compliance

  • Demonstrated success working independently and collaboratively as part of a team while maintaining a high degree of professionalism

  • Proven project management skills with the ability to effectively manage time, prioritize, and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex tax and financial topics.

  • Experienced communicator with the ability to influence and motivate others to implement and maintain a culture of continuous improvement while working with people at all levels

Preferred Qualifications

  • JD and/or Master’s Degree in Taxation

  • Manufacturing/retail environment experience
