As Company’s Vice President for State Policy and Government Relations, you will work with the public policy and political professionals from member companies to develop and manage Company’s 50-state program, managing Company’s regional Executive Directors and coordinating with other Company staff.
Issue Advocacy: Develop, advance, and support Company’s multi-state policy and political agenda, working with Company members. Manage Company’s state lobbyists and consultants in coordination with Company’s regional executive directors. Advocate on behalf of Company’s agenda before state legislatures. Work closely, in a bipartisan fashion, with legislators and their senior staff, policymakers at all levels of government, and member companies. Assist regional executive directors as needed to expand their capacity.
Media relations: Speak on background and on the record with reporters to educate them on tech policy trends, issues, and specific bills and regulations. Work with Company’s communications director to develop op-eds, blogs, and digital content and strategies to frame compelling arguments that support Company’s policy priorities.
Government Affairs: Develop and maintain strong relationships with member companies, legislative and constitutional leaders and their staff, the press, government agencies and commissions, multi-state organizations, and trade associations.
Events: Oversee the management and implementation of numerous relationship-building events for our members — from 1:1 meetings to policy roundtables to political fundraisers and large-scale events including a 2-day fall policy conference — with policymakers, technology industry leaders, and the press. Advise staff as necessary on determining meeting format and flow, scripting, talking points, and logistics.
Policy Analysis: Lead in the development and analysis of policy positions in conjunction with Company staff and Company members. Work with member working groups to determine policy positions, legislative strategies, and related advocacy efforts. Develop subject matter expertise in key policy areas as necessary.
Management: Develop and manage annual budget in coordination with the Chief Financial Officer and CEO. Develop and manage state political strategies in states where that is desired and supported by the membership. Manage and assist regional staff to help them be as successful as possible by developing policy positions; scheduling regular membership meetings; overseeing written reports to members and Executive Council; and achieving desired policy and political results.
Membership development and relations: As appropriate, provide guidance to the Vice President for Membership and Strategic Partnerships on growing Company’s membership through retention and new member acquisition.
