This position would be well-suited to a chemist looking for a leadership opportunity in the flavor industry. The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in organic synthesis, biochemistry or food science. This role is a central position for the growth of our Discovery program to provide proprietary ingredients to give unique tools to our flavorists and provide technical insulation to our products.

Position Summary:

This role will lead the preparation of natural new-to-the-world flavor and taste ingredients. The successful candidate should be able to understand chemical mechanisms and apply them to soft chemistry, cooking chemistry and fermentation. The candidate will lead a group of scientists to study, decode and enhance ADM signature Nutrition products to convert them into proprietary clear-label flavor and taste ingredients that address complex flavor and taste challenges. The ideal candidate should be comfortable applying organic chemistry, enzymology, fermentation processes, botanical fractionation and phytochemistry to the discovery of new pure and complex flavor ingredients.

Essential Functions:

* Create Pro-actively
* Optimize the project pipeline of our existing innovation program and create a vision for new laboratory space.
* Lead the build of a 4000 sqft state-of-the-art laboratory for chemistry and botanical fractionation for the pro-active discovery of new taste, aroma and color compounds
* Manage a team of 5 to 10 scientists at two different campuses in the state of Kentucky
* Collaborate with flavorists and management to prioritize targets
* Manage and grow a network of CRO's and determine which targets they should work on.
* Motivate team to propose new clear-labeled approaches for flavor ingredients
* Build partnership network with ADM Protein, Carbohydrate and Engineering divisions for sourcing of feeding stock
* Reports on status of research activities through verbal updates, written reports, and presentations.
* Keeps abreast of new methods and technologies. Takes initiatives to bring innovative tools that will help the lab create more value with less effort.
* Be a champion for safety standards in lab and pilot plant.
* Consolidate, interpret and present data/conclusions/recommendations in both written and oral formats.
* Work within a diverse team to discover unique processes inspired from chemistry, molecular gastronomy, botanical fractionation and bio-fermentation.
* Communicates with ADM colleagues (eg sensory, engineering, flavorists, regulatory), contract technicians, and ADM suppliers, sending appropriate clear concise messages, expressing ideas, interpretations, and feedback.
* Resolves conflicts optimally to encourage teamwork, without breaking cohesion and trust.


* Ph.D. in organic synthesis, biochemistry, natural product or food science with 5+ years of experience and/or BS/MS with 10+ years of experience in food and flavors.
* Ability to design and run experiments including the selection of starting materials, statistical methods and some routine sample making.
* Experienced with natural product chemistry and separation techniques
* Experienced translating cooking principles to chemistry and biochemistry experiments
* Knowledge of hazardous material and hazardous communications requirements and procedures.
* Working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft Office.
* Ability to execute complex scientific experiments and document results.
* Good understanding of regulatory principles for EU and US natural.

* Ability to function independently while interacting with ADM management, facility management, and ADM contract employees.
* Troubleshooting and problem solving in team environments.
* Effective writing and oral communication skills.
* Meticulous attention to detail.
* Maintain confidential and highly sensitive information.

Physical Factors:

* Ability to sit in meetings, at desk or stand in lab for long periods.
* Ability to use standard office equipment.
