The Manager, Microgrid Operations Position

Sunnova Energy is searching for a Manager of Microgrid Operations to join its Energy Service team and be responsible for maintaining microgrids that bring energy independence to communities and campuses across the U.S. This position will be responsible for the daily operation of microgrid systems, ensuring system uptime and other operating targets. The Manager of Microgrid Operations will participate with and collaborate with internal teams on the initial construction of systems and develop operating plans. As the sales in this market space grows, the Manager will build and manage a team of both employees and vendor resources to perform 24/7 service and maintenance operations.

Manager, Microgrid Operations Responsibilities
  • Implements Sunnovas Microgrid operating strategy and offerings to deliver, integrate, and manage this new business line

  • Develops and implements preventative maintenance plans for microgrid systems

  • Develops and implements unplanned maintenance operating plan for microgrid systems

  • Create operating plans for maintaining generation and distribution services of microgrid for 24/7 operation

  • Hire, develop and train internal team of electricians and technicians to perform preventative and unplanned maintenance

  • Provide recommendations for improvements in design for existing and future generation and support equipment

  • Ensure safe operation of electrical equipment by enforcing company policies and industry standards

  • Coordinates materials, inventory, fleet vehicles, technicians, and maintenance requirements to achieve service level targets for system uptime and repairs

  • Coordinates with NOCC (National Operation Command Center) to measure microgrid system performance, uptime, identify outages and to coordinate maintenance requirements, and respond to weather events

  • Manages service and work orders

    Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or applicable area of focus, or equivalent work experience

  • Capable of end-to-end power systems and project ownership from concept-to-construction through commissioning

  • 5+ years related experience leading teams

  • 5+ years experience developing, designing, constructing and or maintaining energy systems

  • Experience working with backup power, UPS, power systems, grid connectivity, microgrids, DER

  • Knowledge of generator theory, AC/DC circuit theory, protection relays, and electrical troubleshooting practices

  • Knowledge of electrical power distribution and control systems design

  • Understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC)

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in business or engineering

  • Ideal candidate comes from a microgrid/power development firm

    Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel and PowerPoint

  • Analytical thinker with hands on modeling experience

  • Thrives in a challenging and fast-paced workplace and industry

  • Very strong decision-making, organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written with ability to influence others and drive consensus

  • Ability to move priorities forward, takes ownership of responsibilities with little supervision in a matrixed organization

  • Key knowledge areas of energy grid services, energy distribution, and demand response

  • Ability to troubleshoot issues and assist in conducting root cause analysis

  • Ability to work in a team environment and coordinate with other areas to achieve goals and objectives with minimum direct supervision

    Working Conditions

  • In office, open-office environment, not a remote position

  • Estimated travel time of 25% or less
